Side Stand Wobble
« on: June 05, 2016, 09:44:32 PM »
(Sorry, no matches were found)

My side stand has wobble from side to side, resulting in the stand clanking into the muffler instead of seating in the rubber seat attached to the muffler.  I suppose the bushing is worn?  Haven't taken it down yet, as I wanted to order the parts needed to repair ahead of time.  Otherwise, I would have to park it on the center stand and prefer to not do that on un-level surfaces.  They are everywhere here.

It may be both the bushing and the bolt that are worn.

I torqued the mounting bolt to 33 ft. lbs, per the Clymer manual.  That seemed to take some of the slop out but did not completely eliminate it.  Also bent the mount for the rubber stop so the stand does not clank as loud now when flipped to the up position.  I still plan to replace the bushing and bolt once I have the time and the desire.

As mentioned, bushing is worn, or the side stand is bent.  Early K's were recalled for bending side stands, and it doesn't take much.

New bushing picked up today.  Installing the clutch-operated linkage/brackets not too much of a problem, once I figured out how I had taken these things apart.  What gave me problems were the tension springs.  Using my spring puller tool, I got the first one on the pin on the side stand on the 2nd or 3rd try.  I thought to myself "This will be a piece of cake."  WRONG!  For the next 30-45 minutes I wrestled with the back spring but neither the puller, a screwdriver, needle-nose vice grips nor any combination of these would get that spring attached to the pin.  What finally worked was taking the spring to my grinder and removing part of the hook, then took my needle-nose vice grips and attached them parallel to the spring about 1".  This seemed to have been a much easier method of stretching the spring so that it would attach properly.  The new bushing helped reduce the side to side wobble about 75% but I'm working on a K75 that is 21 years old.  Gotta expect some wear and tear here or there.  While I had the side stand off, I sanded it and sprayed it with satin black.

To get the springs on, make a flat wire loop about 3" long out of 1.6 mm wire twisting the ends together. Place one end of the loop over the spring hook place a long screw driver or metal rod through the other end of the loop. Pull down with both hands to hook loop on the peg then cut the loop with a pair of side cutters and remove the loop.

A spring hook tool should have gotten both my springs attached.  Guess it just wasn't my day.  These springs are extremely strong.

I have a spring hook tool but still find it easier with a wire loop.  :dunno
