K75S Fuel pump won't go.
« on: May 27, 2016, 03:18:21 AM »
Just returning to bikes after a while (I am 68 now) after "inheriting" the K75S from my son-in-law who has left Cyprus to work in the middle east. The bike was running not too long ago. Battery not good.

I bought a new battery and thought I would kick it over. However the fuel pump wasn't running ( I think the noise that I heard initially was the starter running on a low battery)

Checked the pump with direct applied volts and it runs fine.

The pump gets it's power from fuse 6 - checked and no volts at the fuse. The fuse gets it's power from the Fuel injection relay. Volts into the relay contact but not operating. Checked the relay coil across the battery and it works fine. Checked the power to the relay coil and volts ok when ign on. Checked the earth side of the relay coil and no earth. Traced it back and it should get an earth from pin 7 of the ign control unit. Peel back the rubber and I can get at the back of the multipin plug as it leaves the ign control unit. No earth leaving on pin 7 (wire colour checks out correct). Not sure where to go from here. Very reluctant to start applying random external earths to operate the relay. PS - I did apply an earth to the wire leaving pin 7 (with the plug disconnected!) and the relay operates and the fuel pump runs!! Do I have a faulty ign control unit? Or.........

I wonder if there is some fail-safe or inhibit at work here? The kill switch is in the centre position but it may have been damaged internally and sending a kill signal which might inhibit the earth? Dunno. I wondered if you know of anything that might be applying an inhibit signal ?  Seems an odd coincidence that the ign control unit should choose this moment to pack in? You don't have to pull the clutch in or put the brake on or lift the stand up, close one eye or stand on one leg? Grateful for any help.

Greetings, Bobfos. How about posting a photo of your bike in the Klassic K Bike section?

Have you cleaned and checked  this connector?

The bike should start with the clutch lever pulled. I can't tell from your post if it does that. Your bike should be fitted with a side stand retractor that when properly adjusted retracts the side stand by a pull of the clutch lever. The stand isn't linked to a switch. If you don't have a workshop manual there is one on the site that covers your model year. I use Clymer's manual.

Do the instrument cluster lights come on and off when you toggle the cut-off switch from center to either side?  That switch provides voltage to the ignition control unit on pin 10.

I am a bit new to this posting business so I am not sure if I am replying to both Laitch and kennybobby but hopefully I am.
Seems that I may have made an incorrect assumption: I was expecting the fuel pump to run as soon as the ignition was switched on I when this did not happen I wasted a good deal of time tracing the "fault" (no earth on pin 7 of the ICU). It now seems that the pump does run but only when the starter switch is pressed and (presumably) when the engine is running.
I have checked and cleaned that connector Laitch and the kill switch does toggle the dashboard lights kennybobby.
So, now I have wet plugs (fuel getting thru) and a good fat spark at the plugs but still the bike won't start.
Battery recharged and having another go today. Watch this space.
