Last week the greenish blue start button popped off after starting my bike. I Didn't think much of it because it still worked fine. Yesterday while riding it I lost the headlight, the taillight, and the directionals. When I got home and turned the bike off the starter was still running and would not stop even when I removed the key, so I turned the bike back to on so it would run then I disconnected the battery so it would shut off. I have no idea where to start with this, when it is running there is no problem except for the lights being out. I also checked the fuse box and everything is fine there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Based on the sentiment expressed in your signature, MADMAX, I'm suggesting you go to the Workshop, click on No Start, and follow the maintenance procedures listed there. Also, if your shutoff switch assembly—which might be part of what you're describing but without a photo, that is unclear—is falling apart, that can create some of what your experiencing and you'll probably need to replace or repair that component.

Hi Gunner,

There was a long thread on this topic over on the K-bike Yahoo group, I think within the last year. Turns out it's not unusual for the button cover to pop off, like yours did. Then people just carry on with it, like you did . . . but it turns out that can lead to all kinds of electrical mischief, problems you would never expect. I don't recall all the details but I'd suggest you start by repairing or replacing the start button and see where that leaves you.

You could try joining the Yahoo group and doing a search . . . but good luck with that . . .

If you do learn more about it, do your Motobricking brothers a favor and post up your knowledge, because I don't recall this particular problem being covered here on the bestest Brick forum on Earth.

Gonna have to get a new switch. Plastic doesn't age well in the sun...Replacing it you will a chance to remove the tank and clean the electrical connections underneath it (deoxit). Electrical problems have three common sources: 1. the frame ground under the tank (brown wires), 2. the starter being dirty, 3. the main ground connection in front of the battery on the tranny. Clean/check these first (use copper anti seize on bolt threads)...Johnny is up in your area, don't piss him off because he can really help you if the afore mentioned checks don't fix it. PS read the rules for posting, the natives here are very restless and unforgiving

Search Motobrick for "stuck starter relay".

rodger all that...

id say low battery condition causing stuck starter relay...

button destruction simply coincidence... butts i guess it could be stuck in causing starter to run...

id be looking for a new throttle side unit that has an good looking and finctional start kill button...

id make sure my battery and starter relay are good to go too...

Nahhh. Once engine RPM > 500 or so, the ECU disables the starter button and coverts it to a fuel enrichment button..

It's below 500rpm and it is just the starter running at that point. Sorry for being such a noob guys.

I have ordered a new right switch assembly that will be here sometime next week. Today removed the old switch assembly and then reconnected the battery to see if it would keep turning over like before, in which case I would also need a starter relay. Well after connecting the battery it proceeded to turn over, so I have also ordered a starter relay. I will updated when it is finished. :2thumbup:

hey gunner, my switch looks just like yours, and sometimes the edge of the button will stick down in the hole, which engages the starter thru the relay.

Yours may have been stuck for a long time while riding it and the relay may have welded the contacts closed--so now the circuit is trying to start all the time. The cover of the relay can be removed to reveal the contacts, which can be pried open and cleaned with an emery board or crocus cloth. A low battery can cause the contacts to weld shut also.

Ok guys I have I got my starter relay today and I put it in right away. When I connect the battery the starter does not run! So that part seems to be fixed. I have not received the switch assembly yet so that is not connected at all. When I have the key in the first position I have lights but when it is in the second position (when you start it) I lose the lights. Is this because I don't have the right switch assembly hooked up or is there another problem?

Be patient. Wait for the new switch, install it and then start wringing your hands if that doesn't cure it. You've already paid for it and they're not likely to accept it as a return. Start plotting your ammo can set up in the meantime, or you can remove the ignition switch and clean it if you're on a cleaning jag. Neglected bikes often need that. Clean the under-tank connections for the fuel pump and the ignition switch too.

If you do not have the right switch assy. connected, you will not have lights. The light circuit is jumpered at the plug in connection.

I got the right switch assembly yesterday and got the bike put back together and it is back to running normal! :riding:
