BMW comfort seat on RS tool box?
« on: April 28, 2016, 05:46:59 PM »
Recently, I undertook the conversion to an lt or comfort seat on my '89 k100 rs.  Wife did not like the standard :bmwsmile.  I had not done adequate research...when the seat got here, I found the toolbox/injection control box would not work with the comfort seat :dunno2:.  One day of frustration, then I started a modification.  Yes, the purists may be dismayed, as my modification is not "stock".  However, the motorcycle is for me, and I happen to really like the toolbox under the seat.  Worst case scenario, I will have to buy an unmodified box from a cafe conversion.  Basically, it was necessary to remove 5/8" of height from the toolbox and then modify the lid.  I had to remove the latch on the rear, but now the seat holds the lid on.

Nice job, and you can still use the tool box.  With fabrication skills like yours I;ll bet you could make a real kewl scrambler out of that SE.

Nope :bmwsmile, I didn't buy it to roach it.  All the time I was riding the R bike, I was watching the K's pass me by.  Now that she rides with me, I just enjoy the ride :neener:

Nice work done  :2thumbup: . Others who like to use a comfort seat, but don't have the patience or skill
to do this work......can use the ECU holder for the low seat models.

I was unable to find that diagram...thanks, Inge.  Apparently for 29$ you can buy the low toolbox, that has no tool box!  I happen to really use the box.  I don't like riding with the side cases, so space is at a  premium.  Regardless, the wife loves the seat, so mission accomplished!!!  I also find that the comfort seat helps me to ride in the "sweet spot".  At 6'2", I found my ass wandering all around the rs seat, with occasional placing of weight on my hands :nono.  Our first ride together made my rear end numb after 50 miles.  We will try a distance drive shortly.

You;re going to love that comfort seat.  I have experienced the standard bench, Sargent, Russell, and comfort.  The comfort is a close second to the Russell as the only seats that I can enjoy sitting on for more than a half hour.  I have easily done 10 hour days and more with that seat.   The Russell is new to me and I have put it on my long distance bike over the winter to get a backrest.  I expect the Russell will be just as nice if not better, especially for the pillion rider.  The only downside to the Russell is that it is a bit over the top in making my RT look a little like a freakin' Gold Wing.

BTW, I am 6'1".

Yup, sorry guys, I looked at the Russell...the thought occurred to me that it looks like an overstuffed sofa.  Real popular, not real practical.  The corbin gunfighter has the greatest appeal to me after the look of the K1 seat.  But once again  :bmwsmile THIS IS NOT ABOUT ME :lets-eat:...MRE :hehehe :hehehe :hehehe

According to the sticker on the bottom, my Sargent seat was made by Corbin for BMW of N.A.   Beautiful seat to look at, but absolutely excruciating after about 45 minutes.  The standard bench seat is more comfortable if you can imagine that.  I have heard a lot of people say how nice their Corbin seats are, but my mileage sure was different.

I am of an age now where ergonomics are critical to how far I can go in a day.  To that end, despite the Laz-E-Boy look, the Russell is the seat for me, but, dammit, that;s as far as I;m willing to go.

BTW gryphon, I have always enjoyed the 1100 fairing on your motorcycle, and the simple utilitarian color scheme.  Was the 1100 fairing a direct bolt up, or were modifications required?

Bolted to all the existing mounts for the earlier RS fairing.  As I recall, I needed the belly pan, lowers, a liner that goes inside the lowers, and the black rubber knee padding that lines the sides of the rairing.  The only additional mount needed was for the belly pan.  I made one out of a piece of stainless sheet in one evening.

I got the idea from some 4 valve RS bikes that had the 1100 fairing.  Apparantly it was a dealer installed option back in the day.  The dealers usually installed the 1100 battery covers as well, but I like the look of the engine stuff under the tank so opted to keep the old covers.  I chose the Ford white with a clear coat because it looks clean, and works well with all the black parts.  Also, since it isn;t a metallic finish, I figured it would be easier to do barnyard touchups.

Don, post it w/price if you want it to go.  I paid $250 for the one on ebay (been on for several months).  Once people see how I dealt w/the "conversion", they may be inspired.  I can personally testify that your SO/wife will like it far better than a stock seat.  I would like to find a Corbin gunfighter just for the hellofit.
