'88 K100 in Hood River area
« on: April 26, 2016, 02:32:35 PM »
Brick heads,

I've decided to sell my K100.  This is a bike I liberated from a granny's garage, restorifixified over about an 18 month period, and then rode the wheels off last summer -- over 8k miles from June to November, or one full rear Bridgestone.  You can poke around here on the forum for some pics and posts about some of my projects as I put it back together.

Mechanically it's solid.  I upgraded to a big alternator, replaced all the intake rubber, replaced the injectors with newer style Bosch from an Audi, all new fuel lines, SS front brake hoses, new front wheel bearings, new cooling fan, new front brake pads, other things I don't even remember.  It has a Rick's custom seat that is quite comfortable for my butt.  It is/was an LT, but now has RS bars.  I can't remember the exact mileage off the top of my head, but it's somewhere in the 60's.

It also comes with a couple (maybe three?) fairly large boxes of assorted K parts, including a complete working electric windshield with new OEM parts in bags from Max to fix what ails it (one side of the lift has a broken arm).  I have some side lowers, a bunch of fairing trim bits, speaker panels, a fuel level sender, a set of forks (no triple), who knows what all.  I also have some other new OEM parts, I think a rear brake master rebuild kit, some little bits and bobs for windshield mounting, lots of hardware, probably other stuff.  It took me a while to decide how I was going to set up the fairing, and so I bought parts I thought I would need and then didn't use.

Why am I selling?  Well, primarily because I bought an R1150GS.  Also, because the Brick needs some cosmetics.  Last November I suffered a case of bad judgement, was following a car too close, and when he unexpectedly slammed on the brakes and hung a left in the middle of a right hand curve I didn't have enough room to properly maneuver and I bounced off the left front fender and visited the ditch.

The fairing and side cases took the majority of that hit.  The right side engine cover is chewed from the slide in the ditch.  I rode the bike home, it was totally OK other then the ugliness.

I don't have any current pics, I'll post some tonight.  If you want to build a cafe', or just want to put your pretty painted parts on a really solid good running base, this could be your ticket.

I'm thinking $1,200 for the whole enchilada.  I'll deliver up to 100 miles from Hood River, OR for a full price offer.  The bike runs and rides, but no fairing (lights, mirrors etc.) so not currently street legal.  Clean OR title in my name.

Another later K100 with a brace-less front fork and 1 piece fender from an 85.  Must be a trend.

Thread drift alert....

Perhaps BMW sold some bikes with earlier manufacture dates, or earlier parts, but registered as later model-year vehicles. I don't know much about the model year differences in the bricks. But I do know that model-year changes can often be transitions, rather than abrupt switches. For example, Moto Guzzi (a smaller volume manufacturer), is known to have sold 2002 spec V11s as 2003s (major difference in fuel delivery system and gas tank is obvious) - and is suspected of assembling "parts-bin" bikes toward the end of model year transitions. While this feels more Italian than German, perhaps it could be true to a lesser extent with the bricks. The example in this thread appears to be an original bike with only minimal modifications (not counting the stripping of the LT body).

ts888: did you remove the fork brace or replace the front fender? - or perhaps that's how you got it?

BTW - best of luck on the sale. It looks like a fairly priced package with all those extra bits you described.

Have you listened to Chris Harris of Affordable Beemer Service explain why the six speed 1150/1200 models should only be shifted into sixth gear at 85 mph or above?

"Snowbum" on the KBMW Yahoo Group has been known to write about this phenomenon in K-bikes. At length and in detail.

Nope.  But I've heard him rant about a lot of other things!   :hehehe  I'll have to give it a listen, since I tend to use 6th at any speed over about 40.  Of course my 1150 is a GSA, so it has the so-called "Enduro" transmission, which has lower 1st and 6th ratio.  Maybe I'm good at 75...

I did change the forks, but the ones I installed are the same as the ones that were on the bike, less the weepy seals.  I think it's safe to say that bikes that are bought as non-running projects out of some grammy's barn are probably best not measured against the Marque Standard   :riding:
