Defies all logic....
« on: March 19, 2016, 12:48:40 AM »
So my tail light wont light up.

I can take the bulb and put it on a 9V battery and it lights up.
I measure 8.75V across the 9V battery.
I then can measure 8.25V across the two wires for the tail light.
When i connect the bulb it wont light up.

Its a 5007 sylvania bulb.

And i know its not the connection because i can touch the two wires together and the BMU indicator will turn off.

Make sure the spring loaded base is pushing up and making contact. Try another globe. Or have you run over any Gypsies or black cats. :dunno

I think im going to buy a lower wattage bulb rated for lower volts and try again.

It was making good contact so idk.

And haha i think the house i live in is haunted, if that counts hahaha

You've got the wrong bulb. You should have a 10W R10 or its equivalent in there. Don't go dimmer. Where did you get the 5007 spec?

Honestly there wasnt an old bulb in there to begin with so i just bought one that looked like it would fit.

Advance doesnt have an R10

Will a 63 or a 67 work?

7V,4.4W and 13.5V, 8W respectively.

Tried both. Neither works.

This is just mind boggling. A light bulb is a light bulb. The only thing i can think of is that although we have a good potential difference across the connectors the wiring back there cant pass enough current to light the filament?

if you are getting current at the socket, ground and pos, seem like it would be bad contact, try sanding the contacts and some dielectric grease.  Also check continuity through the bulb on the socket with the lights off.  I always thought the lights should be getting battery voltage, not the 8+ volts you mentioned.

A bulb is not a bulb.  They all have different spec contacts.   You have to use the bulb the socket is designed for.

And there should be 12v in the socket.

i dont think its inconcievable that there is a 30% voltage drop thru a few feet of 22ga wire.

Will someone go put a multimeter on thier bulb housing and tell me what you get?

Also as far as contact goes....
I crimped brand new connectors on the wires and then touched them to the bulb, circuventing the little bulb holder, and they still didnt light up.

my 30 yr old K has 11.55V at the license plate light, 12.55 at the battery.  Are you close to a black hole that could be sucking away all the photons?

I think the best way to work this is for you to get a multimeter and tell us what you get, Conrad. Start with the bulb socket and work your way through the wiring. You can get a wiring diagram from the one of the shop manuals in the Technical Library Card Catalog.

Another way would be to get one of these and put in your request

that won't help with black holes

Haha since i can see the multimeter is reading 8.25v at the bulb socket... The photons are all there, we have yet to rule out if the black hole is pulling the electrons back to the front of the bike thru the wire haha.

I guess ill deal with this tomorrow seeing as its gonna rain all day.

Also... Does anyone know who Opie's mom is on Andy Grifith? Did she die or what?

small point but K100 wiring is 1.5mm generally, which is 16GA wire, not 22GA.  The voltage drop on 16GA wire over distances of 10-12 feet is minimal.

I think Opie's mom was doing time in the North Carolina women's correctional facility in Mayberry for lewd and lascivious behavior.  I am pretty sure I saw a drive in movie back in the 70's based on her time there.

Yeah, that's the one.  The obligatory mess hall riot scene was a classic.  Couldn't believe how easily the tops of those prison uniforms came apart.   Not that I'm complaining...
