Want to replace light bulbs with LED's
« on: March 16, 2016, 03:54:42 PM »
The first time I owned this bike I installed the running light mod which replaced the sockets and bulbs for the turn signals. They were single filament bulbs, they are now 2 filament bulbs. Now, I'd like to replace them with LED's. Anyone know of a kit or how to modify these t to support LED's and maintain the running light/turn signal functions? Same goes for the tail light as well as the MOTO lights.

Thanks for the info, but I'm not sure that this will work for turn signals with running lights installed...

Leds are directional and only appear bright within a small arc, such as direct on.

Ibelieve this to be true.

#2057 bulbs are brighter, and function the same.

I switched them out on my old  chevy G20 truck, and they are brighter and work fine, but a more sensitive electrical system may produce different results.

I've recently jumpered/bypassed the terminals on the Bulb Monitoring Unit, but what is the downside to just removing the BMU without the terminal jumpers?

. . . but what is the downside to just removing the BMU . . .
Increasing the chances of having a Chatty Kathy ram you from behind because traffic had slowed down and you didn't realize your brake light wasn't working. Sometimes, though, nothing will stop Kathy when she's on her phone except impact.

Since I'm running LED's everywhere I thought the BMU was not able to check those anyway?

Yeah - I should correct my earlier post...

I didn't jumper the BMU, I removed the BMU and jumpered the BMU socket (which has the same effect as this image)

Now I'm wondering what effect not jumpering would have on the bike's operation, as if the BMU was simply removed from the relay box.

i have runnlights... tried leds... was not bright enough for me... i put 1157s back in there... plenty bright...

i have some tail + brake leds on order just like the ones on my truck... they are 1" in diameter and are very bright... i mean very very bright... im gonna take off my 6 year old general dynamics light bar and put these truck lights on there as soon as they arrive...

they will be tail + brake in a 1" package... i been waiting on something like these to come along... they are amazing... butts require a 3/4" hole... so they aints for everybody...

once you moes see these things... all you moes are gonna wanna be putting them on your motoheap...

I like that form factor. Easy to drill and the rubber grommet seals nicely. Same as my four rear turn signals. Maybe I'll get some red ones.

With the LED's I got I found that positioning them so the etched lines on the face are vertical provides the widest, most visible beam pattern.

Just took a look at the wiring diagram and, duh, without jumpering the socket, power will not be delivered to the tail and brake light.

I'm sure yours are brighter, faster, smarter, sexier, easier to install, higher quality and smell like weed, Johnny.

So, Johnny, are your new LED's as bright as you expected?

I've been told my little turn signal LED's are hard to see in the daytime, so I've supplemented them with larger LED's.

I prefer LED bulbs over 1157 because of the fact that in the US they are eventually going to do away with incandescent bulbs and you will be forced to use LED's. I have them in my home (got a great deal on price through my power company-Duke Energy- on all the different types I needed). Not a factor on the bikes or the cars and trucks, but in the house the operating cost is cheaper and they will last much, much longer that a standard incandescent bulb. Plus in the house they are much brighter.
