Oil/water pump question.
« on: March 04, 2016, 10:18:35 AM »
Hey guys, I have an 88 K75 S. I am in the process of rebuilding the water/oil pump due to bad seals allowing all of the coolant to leak out of the little weep hole on the bottom of the pump. Upon removal of the pump, I noticed there was a little bit of coolant in the oil. Should I immediately assume the head gasket, or can bad seals in the water/oil pump allow mixing of coolant and oil? Like many on here I am a mechanically minded soul, without the in depth understanding of how all of these systems function on a micro level.

Thanks,
Andy

Welcome, spanky.
If you really want an understanding of these bikes on any level, read the information available here. You can also learn how others have solved pump problems here.

Should I immediately assume . . . without the in depth understanding of how all of these systems function on a micro level.

My approach is to avoid making assumptions when I know little about a subject, and even if I think I do know a little about it. Failing seals, pump removal, a bad head gasket all can allow the mingling of fluid, depending upon where you found the "little bit of coolant" in the oil.

How many miles on the bike and how long have you been riding it, spanky?
