Legendary Barn Finds Still Happen....

While cruising Craig's sipping a cold one, I came across this listing for "Older Model BMW", no description or picture. So I took the bait and called. The guy had placed the ad for his friend who was old, not computer literate at all, and didn't like dealing with the public. The bike was 1985 K100 RS, but I'd have to talk to the old guy. Three days and several calls, I finally got the old guys phone number. He lives in a retirement community,  typical Cranky Yankee, and builds custom choppers in his garage with a buddy as a hobby.......like they do EVERYTHING, except upholstery work, themselves! And go to invitational builder shows, have placed top three for over ten years, don't do consignments, just what they choose. The K100RS was a neighbor's bike brought down from up North, and the owner couldn't ride anymore but wanted the bike "restored". As a favor the old man took it on, spending 18 months on a complete frame off restoration, but the neighbor died before seeing it completed. Now the widow wanted the bike sold. New mechanical, electrical, paint, plastics, rubber, everything factory fresh, even the decals under the seat. After a bit of haggling, the old man finally said I could look at it. I jumped in my truck, drove six hours, and couldn't believe the bike. The quality of the work is just unbelievable, every system refurbished, everything works, and just factory fresh. Wow!   I remember peeling that System 1 helmet sticker off the tank of my K75 after riding it home from the dealer.  Still got it!

Laitch, if you look on the Florida map, about 15 miles west of Apalachicola in the Big Bend, there is a little spot called Indian Pass, no condo's, 50 miles to the nearest Walmart, we call this area the Forgotten Coast. Highway98 runs along Apalachicola Bay for about 75 miles of the most beautiful coastal ride. Anyone headed down to the West Coast of Florida should come down Highway 98.

If you want to keep it "forgotten", Ace, probably shouldn't describe it on the Web. Anyway, I've only been up to Cedar Key on that coast. It's too cold further than that. Looks mighty pretty though, except for the thugs in their hacks with their curs—or were they the tourists? Probably a primitive form of zoning enforcement now that I think about it. :laughing-on-ground:

Oh, it ain't like its being read worldwide, this is just K bike people. You need to check out this coast road. From Cedar Key, you head north to Perry, hang a left and ride 150 miles. Recently, at night, on that stretch i saw over 100 deer along the road-side and 8 bears. If you do hang out with a local hack driver with vicious dogs, you wont have to worry about security, as long as you don't speak and show that accent.

That doesn't make for safe riding, Ace. Maybe you should add Wednesday night to your bath schedule and change soap. :hehehe

As far as the accent goes, itd be too hard to choose which one to drop—I'm from Coconut Grove. I'm riding back down there in late May for a little visit. When I'm down there I'll pm you through the site to see if your collection of lethal curtain rods and Jamamatics is on public display.  I'll swing by there on the way to points west if it is.

Scatch? Hell, no, that's just a reflection off that fantastic paint! Tell ya, boys, I'm going through that "new bike" phase of just wanting to put it in the living room and polish it! Took a short run fast today, and just too smooth! Can't wait to get a real trip going. For Laitch, or any K-bikers coming down Highway 98, we got a private entrance spare room and a closed garage for stop-overs. Just give a shout. Must like dogs & guns.
