Right indicator not working - buzzing sound instead!
« on: February 03, 2016, 09:08:25 PM »
Hi Guys,

So hoping for some help here as I'm a total newbie when it comes to electrical issues. I recently purchase an integrated LED tail light/turn signal unit from Dime City (http://www.dimecitycycles.com/flexible-led-integrated-tail-light-indicators.html) and after fiddling with it for awhile I got it working (either I'm colour blind or they mislabelled the wiring diagram!). Anyway, it was working fine for about 10min and then the right turn signals stopped working - everything else fine. When I turn the right blinker on I just get a buzzing sound and no lights. Before I ordered this, I talked to a parts guy from Dime City and he said I wouldn't need a resistor for this. So I'm not sure what the problem is. Frustrated to say the least. Any suggestions? Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Mark

For starters, Markus, you could tell us the colors of wires of the light and the colors of the wires on the bike to which each is connected. It could be as simple as poor grounding.

How about a photo of your connections? Has your bulb monitor been effected by all this?

Hi Laitch,

Here's a not very good picture of the wiring connection:

I don't know about the bulb monitor - I have an acewell speedo on the bike and am just in the process of trying to connect everything when this happened

What have you connected already, Markus? What is the difference between the wire colors you have here and the wire colors in the instructions that is symptomatic of your colorblindness?

I've connected the front indicators and headlight, and acewell speedo, and horn. Everything was working fine for about 10min and then this buzzing noise instead of the right indicators (both from and rear). My colour blindness comment (I'm not really colour blind:) was that the installation instructions really just showed 2 orange wires instead of yellow and red, hence my having to change them up a bit to get them working. They did work at first, then the buzzing

Try substituting the flasher relay with another relay. The buzzing could be the relay sticking you could try giving a hit.

Thx Martin, I tried unscrewing the flasher relay this morning and jiggled it a bit, put in back in and same result:( I'm thinking now it must have something to do with the LED's? I only rode this bike once before taking it apart so I'm not 100% sure but I think the indicators are flashing way too fast right now as well. I'll try taking a video when I get home tonight and see if this makes it easier for people to diagnose. I did find this thread that may apply but looks a little scary for someone with my electrical ablilities . . . http://www.motobrick.com/index.php?topic=6780.0

The blinking too fast is definitely an indicator that you need and led rated flasher relay.

Here's a clarification from reading all links in that thread.

You've already done more scary stuff than a lot of us would attempt. Quit postponing the inevitable. If you follow those instructions, it's reversible. Based on the two members supporting that method, I wouldn't hesitate.

Take a deep breath now, then do it.

Hi Laitch,

I'll have to do a bit of research - never cut a circuit board thing before - wouldn't even know what tool to use! Exacto knife maybe?

Way better than a circular saw.  Come on now. You need an endorsement from Beyoncé? It'd be better to send a pm to one of the successful participants in that thread with your question

I've studied the electronics for the flashers extensively in the past--I was designing an Arduino controller that would, among other things, control the flashers so that, among other things, I could use LED lights.

Long story short, all the circuitry in the K-bike is designed for incandescent bulbs and the type of load that they present.  LEDs are diodes, electrically speaking, and present a different kind of load, not to mention a much higher resistance / lower current load.  I'm not surprised things went hay-wire.  The bulb monitor, for instance, will always think the bulbs are burnt out.  The flasher also won't work properly.  Unfortunately, the flasher is not a standard automotive type that you can buy at your local store and thus replace by simply plugging in a new one designed for use with LEDs.

The simplest way to solve it while keeping LED lights is to use what's called a "load resistor".  It's a resistor (which is basically what an incandescent light bulb is, electrically speaking) that presents the same type of load to the electrical system as an incandescent bulb would.  Thus, all the circuitry should work properly.  It does, however, draw just as much power as an incandescent bulb (which defeats some of the purpose of using LEDs in the first place), except instead of emitting light, it generates heat.  That's why they have heat sinks on them.  You'll need one for each bulb.  Try to match them with the same wattage as the incandescent bulb being substituted.  They hook up in parallel with the LEDs.  LEDs draw so little current by comparison that it typically works just fine.  I've never known someone who did this with a K-bike, however, so no guarantees...

How do you explain the success of the participants in the thread that has been referenced, deft? I like the elegance of the snip technique.

I didn't see the snip technique.  Obviously, some modifications would be needed to get it to work with LEDs.  Wow, if it's that simple, I might do it on mine!  :yes

What about the bulb monitor, though?  Doesn't the red warning light turn on when the bulbs are replaced with LEDs?

Check out all the links on that thread, deft. I'm satisfied with the clunky instrument panel as is but I'm impressed by the solutions that others develop for problems they encounter with modifications.

Markus77, check out this post: http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,659.msg46416.html#msg46416

Exacto knife should do the trick!  If it were me, I'd cut a tiny square out of the trace.  No need to cut the underlying board material, just the trace.  Be careful not to cut any of the other traces.

I'm still looking for the answer to my bulb monitor question...  :dunno2:

Blinkers aren't affected by the bulb monitoring unit (BMU).  That's nice to know.  However, LED tail and brake lights will confuse the BMU.

BMU can be bypassed entirely: http://www.motobrick.com/index.php/topic,331.0.html

OR, testing of the brake switches can be preserved while bypassing the bulb tests through modification of the BMU: http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/k-hints.htm

I might do the latter.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help! I'll email the guys from that thread Laitch - a good suggestion. If I can really just cut out a small square with an exacto knife on the board, I think I'm okay with that:) I'll ask them in any case. Right now, I'm kind of just kicking myself that I risked going with the LED's in the first place as I had a sneaking suspicion that I would be running into troubles despite the info I was given...

That will work.

I don't have that exact one, but any flasher relay w/low amp requirements are designed for led...

Cut the trace on the factory unit and you will be good to go for LED turn signals.  Nothing to it.
