check my valve clearance numbers please
« on: December 19, 2015, 11:25:01 AM »
G'day all,

If you could be so kind as to check my numbers on the valve clearance check prior to me ordering new buckets it would be greatly appreciated.
The bike is a 93 1100 with 80,000 km, service history would suggest that nothing besides oil changes has ever been done.  The block temperature was 8C/47F.  Measurements were taken as go/no go in mm NOT inch.

Intake

cylinder   1a         1b         2a        2b         3a      3b          4a       4b
go           0.13      0.13      0.18     0.18      0.13   0.15       0.18    0.13
no go      0.15      0.15      0.20     0.20      0.15   0.18       0.20    0.15

Exhaust

cylinder   1a         1b         2a        2b         3a      3b          4a       4b
go           0.28      0.25      0.25     0.25      0.28   0.25       0.30    0.28
no go      0.30      0.28      0.28     0.28      0.30   0.28       0.33    0.30

To me this suggests that i need new buckets for INTAKE 1a,1b,3a,4b and EXHAUST 4a.  Is this correct?

From this how do I determine which buckets to order?  Is there a one standard size that was installed at the factory? Do I have to disassemble and look for a stamping?

Thank you for looking and your advice.

Rick

Additionally, what other parts should I order beside the gasket?

Is there any other maintenance I should do while this is apart?

Cheers

Okay, so maybe i should have waited to post. I found the stampings.

1a has 2.85 so get a 2.90 ?
1b has 2.80 so get a 2.85 ?
3a has a 2.85 so get a 2.90 ?
4b has a 2.9 so get a 2.95 ?

4a has a 2.80 so get a 2.75?

Please confirm, thanks

they should be shims, not buckets.  the shims go in the buckets.

if you want the gap to increase you need the next size smaller, not the next size larger.

you need inner and outer gaskets, new seals for all the bolts, and new "half moon" seals.

The '93 4V1100's use buckets. The older 2v 100's and 75's use the shims that can be changed without removing the cams.

You will have to remove the cams and the individual buckets. The buckets are stamped on the inside with their size.
When I did mine I also mic'd the bucket to confirm that the stamping was correct, and/or checking for bucket wear(which was negligible).
Take the bucket size and then add/subtract the differences in your clearance measurements. The buckets come in increments of (.05) so what you need may not be an exact match, so get the closest you can to be in the safe zone.

Others may say against it but, I personally am not opposed to swapping buckets if that gets me in spec. At ~$30 each, it can add up quick if you need more than just a couple.

thanks for the shim vs. bucket correction.  i am used to the 2v moto engines and the 4v S14 bmw car engines.  all shims.

Mlytle, not a problem.... There are still many differences between the 2V and 4V bikes that I'm not keen on either as I don't ride one yet.....

Back to the OP, you should be able to re-install the cover gasket so long as you didn't tear it up getting it off. They are pretty robust.
When putting it back on, don't be chincy with the RTV at the corners and joints where the valve cover meets the timing case cover as well as the half moon areas.

As far as the rubber 'seals' for the cover bolts, if they feel stiff as if they are loosing their elasticity, then change them. The bolts are a shoulder bolt, so when installing them they will break if you over torque them.
The "pressure" that holds the valve cover to the head is the elasticity of those rubber seals. If they start to get stiff they can't maintain the pressure on the gasket, and oil can start leaking.
I changed mine this year, after 20 years, yours could be due just from age and exposure to the sun.

It's my understanding that it's quite likely that a local BMW dealer would let you trade shims, so that's an option if there's one within driving distance of you

This used to be the case, however I found at my dealer that, since they work less and less on the older K's, they don't keep all the shims in the Service department's 29mm shim kit. Last time I asked for a swap they only have a couple I could use. Had to order the rest. They're not expensive but you need to wait for them to get shipped.

My local Kawasaki dealer has a better selection of compatible 29mm shims in stock. (They fit lots of Kawasaki bikes)
