New grips

I am replacing the grips on my 1987 K100 LT.  I ordered Progrips from the Motorcycle Superstore.  They sent the 699 Sportbike Gel Grip, sku68551, this is called the soft touch open end Progrip.  The grips have Different interior diameters and instructions say to put the smaller on the left grip.  However there is no way that it will stretch to fit.  It appears that both handlebar ends are the same diameter.  Anyone with this issue ever?  Perhaps they just send the wrong item?

One last thing, I'm trying to clean up my twist grip inners, but am having difficulty removing the single Phillips screw on the underside of the switch assembly. Any ideas other that getting an impact driver?

Have you actually measured the diameters, or just eyeballed them?

The fitment guide indicates they are compatible with K-bikes.  I'd try using hairspray on the insides while trying to fit them.  The hairspray will lubricate them during fitment when wet and secure them when dry.

Thanks to you both, I could have been more clear.  The diameters of both handlebar ends are the same.  So curious why the rubber grips I bought have diameters that are different left to right.  I was wondering if other motobrickers have different diameter handlebar ends from left to right.  I have been able to put the larger grip on both sides, using alcohol to lubricate the rubber grip first - then is evaporates and the grip is secure.

The grips need to be different.  One goes on the left which has 7/8" / 22mm diameter and the other larger one goes on the right which has to account for the throttle sleeve of 1" / 25mm diameter.

Latich and rbm,

Thanks for your advice on this topic.  The handlebar ends are different sizes, the right being 25mm and the left is larger, 26.5 mm.  Not sure why this is.  However I solved the issue by putting the smaller diameter grip on the throttle side and the larger on the clutch side.  Using rubbing alcohol to lube the grips while installing worked well and they are now secure.

I also followed one of the threads on this site about cleaning the throttle gear assembly.  The screws were stuck on the assembly so I soaked then with silicone lube a couple of days and got them off.  It looked like this had never been cleaned before.  So after cleaning and lubing with silicone spray the throttle now snaps back like it should.

When installing the grip end cap, I noticed that if I tighten the end cap screw too much, that it locked the throttle.  I am wondering if this is supposed to happen?   I have just left it minimally tight.

A photo would be nice but I'll hazard an observation. If you've got the throttle tube flush with the handlebar tube, the expanding plug or whatever it is inside the cap may be contacting the handlebar tube creating friction. If you were to slide the combination switch and throttle assembly outward about 5mm or so, you could tighten that screw a little more snuggly then forget about it. If the cap felt secure now and it were my bike, I'd forget about it anyway.

Laitch,

I am sure that is the problem, however as you said, it is tight enough to stay on and the throttle works fine so I will leave it as is.
