Easy Question...Maybe a Dumb one.
« on: September 19, 2015, 07:47:21 AM »
Ok, 96 K75 standard.  Runs great and pristine in most ways.

Throttle handgrip moves one half inch when going from idle before the engine starts to increase RPMs.
Otherwise the throttle works fine, and snaps back quickly when released to slow down.
How to adjust?

Thank you.

Have you pulled off the cover and had a look at the throttle mechanism at the grip? There grip has teeth that turn kind of a pinion gear to which the throttle cable is attached. There's a line marking the 0 position where the gear wheel and the gear teeth on the grip should line up. It's possible it's just off by one tooth -- it's easy to do when reassembling it. I know it's easy because I've done it.

Keep at it and get the "free play" in spec.  Ive had the cable at the throttle end actually jump out of the housing / holder.

Wow, thanks for that news about the cable falling out of its holder...I'll get on it.
Any trick to getting the handgrip removed?  I may have done it once to my first K75, but forget the details (am pushing 80).

The throttle cable cover comes off with the big phillips screw just to the right of the master cylinder. Make sure you use a big screwdriver so as not to strip that screw. Then loosen the two Allen bolts that hold the master cylinder on. If my memory serves me correctly, all you need to do is pull the MC back a bit so the cover has enough clearance to come off.  Then you can use a very small screwdriver to gently pry the cover off. If you don't want to make any marks, make sure you put some cloth or something between the pry tool and the surface...the finish is easily marred.

If you have the Clymer, read the procedure for Replacing the Throttle Cable. If possible, don't remove the MC completely and try not to let the throtte cable slip out through the MC. IMO replacing the throttle cable is a moderate PITA job if you have to thread it thru the MC-- at least I remember it to have been a PITA. Your goal should be just to open the cover, rotate either the grip or the gear as necessary to get the marks to line up, and button the thing back up, disturbing as little as you can in the process, ideally without disengaging the cable end from where it is seated in the mechanism.

Good luck!

On my K100 the throttle mechanism cover comes off without moving the master cylinder at all, though it is easier to get the cover off once the switch gear is removed (single screw at the bottom of the switch).  This is because there is a little lug on the cover that the top of the switch gear slots on to.

That's why I qualified it with 'to my memory' --I can't remember myself whether you need to touch the MC to remove the cover. The manual says the MC has to come off but that's probably for the cable replacment, not just to get the cover off to adjust the freeplay.

Any K75ers with a better memory than me want to chime in here? If not, Bokobob, it might be up to you to get the cover off and refresh everybody's memory.
