How to fit the clamps on the intake manifold bushings

Hi all,

My question is, how do you tighten them? I only get one chance and don't want to ruin it.

They worked perfectly and the job was much easier than I expected. (Then I realized that they were almost the same as the ancient ones in my toolbox  :dunno)

I have a tool like that I think. But I wasn't sure how to tighten the things. I suppose  you just squeeze either side of the lug (about 2 o'clock in the photo)? Will it click into place by graduations or what?

I was just thinking how I'd like to replace the crusty hose between the rear master cylinder and reservoir and needed a small version of these clamps (plus the tool itself).

no problem, I spent a while searching the forum for hose clamps, so I decided to do a post with the official BMW part names and numbers for any future searches. But I must know how to put the damn things on, had to wait ages to get them.

Yes, just squeeze either side of the lug.  I didn't feel any clicking, it just squeezed together really easily, much less force needed than I expected.

The part that you crimp balloons outward. I tried pinching harder and look what I did to the bottom left one. Maybe my pinchers are too thick?

Manual says to get the clamps off, use BMW  pliers  13 1 500. Then in another chapter, you can clearly see ordinary jubilee clips on the hoses :yow

I've just been out and looked at mine.  They look just like the one that your pinchers are resting on.  Is the damaged one gripping tight enough?  I have read that some people have used cable ties here, so I suppose they don't need to be that tight. 

It's hard to see in the pic, do the pinchers taper to a point?

Just read your last post.  I tried very hard to find jubilee clips in the correct width (UK), but failed.

The pincer you're using is wrong.  You want one that looks like an old fashion wire fencing clippers:

The jaws are 90° to the action; yours are inline with the action.  To use your chosen pliers with the oetiker clamps, you'd have to remove the airbox and TB assembly from the engine and perform the operation on the bench.

You may want to consider using Suzuki 48mm band clampsl.  Part 09402-48208 for TB->bushings and bushings->air plenum on K1100s.

Those Suzuki clamps look like a good idea, wish I'd known about them when I did the job!

Find my thread about doing this job, it has a p/n for clamps from McMaster-Carr that fit perfectly.

A few good alternative ideas here.   If you decide to go the stock route, here's a picture of a clamp tool made by Schwaben.  Note the 'cutout' area immediately behind the pincer tips that allow the clamp to expand laterally, also, the small tab between the tips and the tool hinge that keep the clamp from expanding outward.

I didn't get the bit about the jaws being 90° to the action; mine look the same to me. I may try modifying them with a grinding wheel after seeing that other tool. How hard do you need to squeeze these things? The one I tightened still rotates around the bushing if I push it.
Did look at the suzuki solution but the clamps were several times the price and I didn't like the look of the philips screw instead of a hexagon head you get on jubilee clips. Although I'm beginning to wish I'd gone that way now. Particularly as I can see myself taking the thing apart again one day.

I'm not sure which country you're in but the Suzuki clamps are only 3 euros each here: http://www.cmsnl.com/products/clamp_0940248208/#.Vf1mSd9Viko.  Postage may be steep though, thinking back to last time I bought from them.  The tool I bought on Ebay is similar but has more of a taper on both sides of the pincer tips, particularly on the inside.  The tool that RobP pictures looks even better.

Apologies DFX.  You're using the right tool and it should be good as it stands.  Your photo made me think you were using a regular set of side clippers.  The oetiker clamps have to be squeezed moderately tightly.

Thanks for the help, next time probably not use the genuine BMW clamps.

But wait, inspired by the Schwaber tool, I did this to my pincers. Worked a treat, but could have done with the bit in the middle to stop the crimped part of the clamp from bulbing out.

Here's the inside of one of those one-timer clamps. This one looks like it could be a two-timer clamp. So you just crimp it to tighten. Seems obvious that in time they will work loose.
