Radials for 2.75" rear 150/70/17???
« on: July 09, 2015, 07:35:46 PM »
Greetings all,

With the Avon Azaro (AV55) discontinued, 140/80/17 radial options are even fewer. One option is the 80% road 20% Bridgestone Battle Wing. However, I'd prefer a street tire. :musicboohoo:

Get this: the new Avon Storm tires have an unbelievable 15k mile warranty! (see URL's below). It'd be great to test them on it. I've never gotten more than 7k miles out of a set of tires (mountainous commute with plenty of yeeeeeehaw :riding:) They come in 110/80/18 for the front. But the rear would have to be 150/70/17. I understand some motobrickers with a 3" rear wheel are using 150/70/17 radials. However, my 1990 k75 has the snowflake 2.75" rear wheel.

My question is this: Has anyone with 2.75" rear been <<crazy>> enough to use a 150/70/17 radial???

Thanks for any input!

There are 140/80 radials out there. That size is considered a +1 size which is the generally accepted safe limit for larger tires on  the 2.75 rear.
There are some who disagree about the 140/80 tires on the snowflakes. Some say 130/90 is the limit and others say 150/70 works fine. I know this isn't a solid answer because different people have differing ideas on what is safe.

Check out the tire recommendations threads, Johnny was saying something about PR2's if you dont mind trying the larger tires.

Also, are you hooked on the older snowflake style or would you consider switching to a later style rim?

*BTW-There are several different tread types of Battlewing tires. There is a 90/10 tread that looks closer to the Metzler z6 front than it does an off-road tire.

Thanks for the comments Freelancer, much appreciated.

That's good to know Battlewings come is differing road/dirt ratios.

Yeah, I'd be excited to throw on a 3" Y-spoke wheel in the rear!
Know of any for sale?
I haven't seen any after some preliminary searching...

I say Johnny's post about the 150/70s he put on a 3" rear.
I'd do that in a heartbeat.
Honestly, I'm considering doing it with the 2.75'!!

Thanks again for chiming in.

Check ebay for a 3" 3 spoke rear rim.  I found one at a good price not long ago (under $50)  The Y spoke rim at 2.75" may cause a 150 to have more of a rounded shape.  However, if you can fit it on and you're ok with it, then go for it.

FWIW  I'm not a purist, but for the sake of accuracy , the "Snowflake" rim is actually the rim for the R80 through  R100 airheads.  They are a cast wheel and are prone to cracking. As in catastrophic failure type cracking.  The Y spoke on the K's doesn't have the same issue.

There are a few Avon Azaro 2's on ebay in a 140 rear.  If you go that route as them to send a pic of the 4 number production stamp (WWYY).
