Sturgis : Who's Going?
« on: June 25, 2015, 12:38:32 AM »
Yep, a thread asking, "Who is planning/thinking of going to the Sturgis 75th Anniversary Rally?".

If so:
-Who is planning on riding the whole way?
-Any of you guys gonna just do a ride by?
-How far will your trip be?

If not:
What better rides/uses of money are you planning for that time frame?

Discussing heading that way with some friends and am interested in who might be there.

As a resident of SDakota, I usually tell motorcyclists that the best time to visit the black hills is anytime BUT the Sturgis rally. What is fun about chugging along behind a 2 x 2 Harley parade at 35mph on great roads? Oh, what you see on TV is BS, The titties are old, the butts are fat and the food and beer is stupid pricey. After Waco, who wants to be around them for their next squabble over a parking space?

* Now I'm going to get black helicopters circling my house and the SD tourist office black balling me.

I hear ya Snowman,

There is a bmwmoa meet in Billings, Montana and some other meet up in Colorado about that time. Was thinking of hitting one of those then riding by "Sturgis" on the way home.

Thing is that my friends are a mixed bag that ride Bricks, Hogs, Pigletts and Honda's. We all recognize that going up/ meeting up early would allow for a better time riding, buts .... Some of the group have a big thing for it being the "75th" Anniversary.

What I'm hoping for is to get up there early and enjoy the riding then sorta glance off of Sturgis just as it starts.
Will have to see how everyones schedules line up.

So, Snowman, do you recommend getting up there 1week or 2 weeks early in order to enjoy the roads?

A week early is fine, 2 weeks would be better. The vendors will be the only ones around doing setup. I'm looking at the Billings MOA rally also, it will be a last minute thing for me depending on work, I haven't booked anything.

Every motel for 500 mile radius will be booked ahead of time. I made the mistake of crossing country when Sturgis was happening and there were many a nights I rode to exit after exit trying to find a cot...no room at the inn. Never again.

I rode thru the week after on my way further west, I had an entire campground to my self.  Was prepped to pitch my tent but the owner let me have a cabin for the same $ since I was the only one there.......

For those that are interested, I just noticed that there is a National Sidecar Rally in Sturgis starting today.

In July there are both:
)The Top of the Rockies - July 16-19 in Paonia, Colorado

)The 43rd BMW MOA International Rally - July 23-25 in Billings Montana

Tho, not in July,  The 75th Sturgis Rally runs Aug 3-9.

So, lots of excuses to go ride in that part of the country, this summer.

May just tell my friends to go on their own schedules and solo it to the events that I want to visit. .... Tho, Dave does have a hook-up for a place to stay about 90 miles out from Sturgis.

...... Hmmm, if I could just get 3 consecutive weeks free. :yes

Maybe, I should change the title of this thread to "What Rallies are you Going to this Summer?".

went through the sturgis area 2 weeks ago, no one on the roads but me! why would you have it any other way?
been to the ralleye once, never again! throngs of harleys create a rolling road-block, great if you're in to that sort of thing but not for this bricker!
pic is from Spearfish Canyon, ride worth seeking out.

Is it hard to see how fast you're going from that riding position?

My wife and I were in the midst of a cross country move a few years ago and found ourselves in the same situation.

That said, I'll be going this year as I have been invited by my brothers. I've never had the chance to ride with them. I'll be riding my bike the whole way, though for me it's not as far as some of you. I'm starting in fargo.

Looks like I'll be up in the area towards the end (6th-7th Aug).

Dates depend upon my finding possible problem with bmu and how long it will take me to ride up there from Texas (Leaving this coming sunday/monday).

On the way to Huelett that week. Living in Fargo has really made me forget how awesome riding can be. Even with all the other riders, we got some excellent curves, and I bombed twisties harder than ever before. Now I need a new tire.
