Water/Oil Pump Re-Rebuild?
« on: June 21, 2011, 04:28:50 PM »
My '91 K75 is leaking oil through the weep hole in the oil pump. I rebuilt it a year or so ago. I think the shaft may be too pitted and is causing the leak. Any way to salvage the shaft? Maybe stick it in a lathe and polish it really well?

If it's pitted you have to remove material to make it smooth again, thus making it smaller for the seals, and more leaks.

For all the effort and care to rebuild I'd just put a new shaft in it and be done with it.

That's just me, though.YMMV

Had experience with that issue it is a lot easier to buy a new shaft than beat your head on a brick wall then buy a new shaft.

I feel your pain.  I just got finished with an oil and coolant change on my K1100LT about ten minutes ago.  Right when topping off the coolant oil appeared.  Doh!  :'(

Yeehaw - NOT!

Fortunately, I've got another low mile (from it's appearance) pump unit to swap in in the morning.

What a waste of four new quarts of Mobil 1. :o  That ch1t costs almost as much as gas these days.

My other Ks are not lidless friendly.  The main reason I keep the LT is for riding east without a helmet. Yeah, I'm one of those guys who stops at the state border and takes off his helmet.  So blow me.

The LT just hit 50k.  It's getting the works: complete spline lube(done), totally rebuilt Ohlins I scored last month(done), moly'd synthetic gear oil(done), Works Performance springs, new fork seals, steering head bearings adjusted(tomorrow), a new AM/FM Pioneer head unit that reads SD cards and will work with my Nano(Thursday when it shows up) and a bunch o' other ch1t.  It will truly be the finest LT on the planet.

I'm just pissed that Rick Mayer couldn't get my new seat to me on time.  But the Ruzzel I've got now is pretty comfy though so I'll live....

I don't have oil/water transfer, just a bit of a drip out of the weep hole after 3 days of high speed, High load riding in 100 degree heat. I can see some oil and gunk spread back on the bottom of the engine. After 1200 miles of that riding, it only lost maybe a quarter inch up high, if even, on the sight glass. Any reason to worry for the time being?

Check the oil sight glass window after riding.  If it's frothy (bubbly if yer from Iderhoe) then that means water is getting into the oil.

Make sure you keep the weep hole cleaned out.
That way any oil or water that may leak out can get out and not get "pushed" into the other side.

Water pumps suck.  I swapped the one on my LT today.  I can usually get by sitting on a bucket to work on my bikes but a lift sure would be nice for that job.
