Turn Signal Connection Repair
« on: April 21, 2015, 08:56:50 PM »
The wires have broken off the connectors on both of my turn signals and I was wondering:
  • How to dislodge the internal metallic connector from the plastic housing for re-soldering, OR
  • Is there a source that can supply new connectors,  OR
  • any other tips for a proper repair?

My answer is not necessarily for the connector you are referring to but to connectors in general that I have worked with for over 30 years.  The metal insert is inserted from the side of the wire.  It has flexible spring clips that when they are inserted into the hole they will compress to allow them to be inserted.  Once inserted far enough the flexible spring clips will pop back to their original position.  To release the metal insert you need to insert something very small into the other end (without wire) and depress the spring clips and push back out toward the wire end.  I have a removal tool somewhere for one size of molex connector that fits most molex connectors sold by Radio Shack.  It only works with one size.  I was hoping to find a picture of an uninserted pin to show but I was not able to.

"proper" is the key word there.  I just use hardware store variety spade connectors.

It will require a special contact removal tool to release the contact from the housing.

AMP 305183 for example.  The tool is inserted into the housing over the contact that you wish removed.  Pushing the plunger will eject the contact from the housing.

A crimp tool for the female contact pins is all that's needed.
Cut the wires as close to the housing as posibble.
Crimp on the new female contact pins.
Push the female contact pins into a new housing until it makes a click.
