Warning Light Test in Instrument Cluster
« on: March 31, 2015, 05:26:55 PM »
Can anyone tell me if the overheating warning light normally goes through a test with the ignition turned on? I noticed that the brake light and neutral light test, as well as battery and oil but not the choke and temp lights....is this normal? The high beam light also does not test.

Thanks!

The High beam and turn indicator lamps do not test when system is started.

Temperature warning light does not come on when starting.  You only see it on an overtemp alarm.

This is the case with my '91 K75S and I was worried about it so I swapped bulbs about so I know there's a working bulb there. Why doesn't it test? Seems odd that such a reliable and sensible bike does not have this feature. What happens if the bulb fails unknown to the rider?

If your temperature light fails it will not effect the fan coming on. I was worried because my fan never came on, so in the end I installed a bypass, so I can operate the fan at anytime. K bike fans are prone to seizure so it is good to test them & make sure they rotate. Just stick your finger in and rotate the blades it can be hard to do this. My fan was seized when I got the bike, and a new fan motor was $200 Aus 16 yrs ago. So I adapted a Davies Craig car fan which is totally sealed, & run it occasionally. You can also put it on the stand and run it till the fan comes on, approximately 10min.

When I first got this bike the fuse had gone for the fan so it wasn't working. However at no point did the warning light come on, even in traffic nor at any time during a 1000 mile trip in the UK. It was after I discovered the blown fuse that I checked the bulb but it was working. So when does it come on? How hot does the bike have to get? You can see the potential for trouble if you get a blown fuse / defective fan AND a duff bulb that you've no indication of.

I had the temp light come on only once.   Standing in stop and go traffic for an hour in 35C.

Thanks for that, I hope I never see the light come on.
