Did BMW ever change the mounts on a K75 tank?
« on: March 13, 2015, 04:54:55 PM »
There's a big dent in the side of my current tank and the bolts have been sheared off the filler cap housing, so I picked up another tank. I got it cheap, so I can sell it on if it doesn't fit without losing any money. The guy said it would fit a K75, but I think it might actually be from a K100. Now I have the tank next to the bike, I can see that the one on the bike doesn't have a big rectangular tab on the back of the tank, and the replacement one does.

This is the gas tank on my 1986 K75C with no rear mount:

Before I tear into the bike, is there a chance in hell it's going to fit or can be made to fit without welding? Thanks!

Your replacement tank is from a -83 -85 K100, the battery cover and radiator cover mountings is different.
Also the electrical connector is different...unless it's a late -85.

greetings jules...

welcome to motobrick.com...

what the mayor of fredrikstad is saying is there is more crossover on 86 and new motobricks... the pre86 motobricks being the 1st generation were different in more ways than nought such as your new tank being whack...

furthermore... not all k75 tanks are the same... whats the last 7 digi of your vin...

It's a UK K75C, and the VIN is 0111454K75C.

I'm getting the feeling that I might be better off trying to repair the existing tank. There's a nice crease on the edge that is going to be a PITA to smooth out. I guess I can always get it as good as I can and then fibre glass / filler over it.

Hi Jules,
Oddly, I kind of liked the weird dual headlights. They fit what is already a slightly odd bike! I'm looking to take my RT naked. Could you tell me the outside diameter of that headlight? Is that a motobins purchase?

Thanks!

It's 195mm maximum external diameter (inc bezel).

It was an eBay 7" special. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/351351136864
