Injection Valve wiring question...FIRE in the hole!!
« on: February 27, 2015, 11:56:24 AM »
My 85 k100rs had a gas leak under the tank which resulted in a FIRE! Fortunately, this happened just outside my garage and I was able to extinguish it quickly...only a matter of a few seconds. Very glad I had a fire extinguisher nearby!! Anyway, after it was extinguished, and leaving it sit outside for a couple of hours to evaporate the spilled gas (one of the supply lines on the tank had come loose), the bike started and ran fine, except the fire had melted the Bowden cable (throttle cable) and the throttle was locked at idle. Before replacing the cable, I removed the air box to survey the extent of other damage. The air box suffered some cosmetic damage at the front at the latch but I was able to find a replacement air box assembly on ebay for $8.00, so no big loss there. The wiring all appears to be fine except the wires going to what I think is the injection valve. These two wires concern me. One appears to go to a ground on the fuel rail...insulation, if there was any, is completely gone...just a bare copper wire is left. The other wire goes to the valve itself. This one feels "brittle" now and I definitely want to break into this 2 wire harness and splice in new wiring at some point further up. Has anyone had any experience with this "injection valve" wiring? It is the apparatus on the fuel rail mounted on the inside towards the front of the rail. In other words, looking at it from the right side of the bike, the valve is on the right side of the rail, towards the front of the bike, and visible only when the air box is removed. So far, I have not been able to remove it from the rail...still working on that.  Any comments?

It's a vakum switch which should change ignition curve at part load, just disconnect and forget.
It should give better fuel economy.....it did nothing, and was leaved out at later models.

Thanks for the quick reply, Inge! Should I just leave it alone, or is it best to clip the wires, since I'm in there?

I would probably clip and seal the wires, with an exposed one you are looking at issues with the switch either shorting or activating at random times.

And remove the hose going to #1 TB, put on a cap as on #2 & 3.

Probably replace the other caps while you're at it. They seem to dry out and crack.

Inge, so is it best to pull that hose off number 1 TB and cap it? Or, if all else is fine, just leave the hose? I have yet to run this bike so I'm trying to get all the jobs done before she goes back together....

With thanks!

Did have future leaks in mind....it's a smaller chance that a fresh cap starts to leak than the old hose/switch,
also easier to control/check if a air leak is suspected.
