New K75s owner in Hawaii
« on: December 30, 2014, 10:01:41 PM »
Hey folks, happy to join you with my new to me 91 K75s. I think it's in pretty decent shape for the deal I got. It joins my KLR 650 as a more road oriented tourer. I'm a big guy so I need to get the suspension sorted of course. It reads 29k but the odo gears stripped and stopped turning, I believe it's close.

Need to lube the splines and sort a couple electrical issues. Abs light goes out after moving but the bulb light stays solid, all brake lights and switches working. Neutral and gear indicator switch is funky. The Previous owner had an issue with the cooling fan and wired it to a hard switch, I will need to sort that. I believe he indicated the fuse for the fuel pump had blown a couple times, it whines pretty good, I will pull it to check the rubber and change the filter. There occasionally is a sharp grinding sound when trying to start it, thinking it's the sprag mechanism, but maybe the starter needs to be looked at, picked up some of the rislone treatment for the motor and sprags. There is a vibration gravelly sound at low Rpms, thinking this is the monkey nuts I've read about. Valves need to be adjusted. Need to reinstall the belly pan he gave me with no hardware, it's been dropped and the bar is tweaked so I need to straighten things out and eventually paint.

Starts and runs easy. What a sweet sweet smooth motor! I won't let go of the handle bars again, but it seems to handle decent considering the age and shape of the tires and suspension. Hoping to have her sorted and enjoy many many smooth miles on her. A lot of soul in that motor.

Aloha!

Lol! Ain't that the truth! Earthy island sativa for me pleas!  :euro  Now that I got my head straight it occurs to me that the monkey nuts wearing out might allow metal to metal contact and create the sharp noise sometimes when it starts? Not every time you mash the butt en, but sometimes. Time to pull the starter. I thought the tranny in my KLR was clunky, but there is no hurrying this K bike tranny, no forgiveness in the driveline either, must be why those splines get it.  :nono

Oops that's right.

They're both hanging off the back there by the battery I guess. I will get to all of it on the way to the clutch splines. Can I get the gear position switch while I'm in there too? Monkey nuts explains the rattle at low rpms I'm guessing, in the 2k range. sharp noise from the starter must be the sprag clutch? Or is there some other coupling that can fail? Maybe the rislone treatment will help it...

Been in there with the monkey nutz on my K75.  Didn't fix it.  Did cam chain and tensioners, valves, throttle balance, still clanks.

If the noise is a clank/tap between about 1200 and 1800 rpm I suspect it is a weak anti-backlash spring on the end of the output shaft.  This spring is supposed to tension a second gear on the end of the shaft to prevent the primary output gear from making a clanking noise.   Mine has been doing it since I got the bike and I now have 8000 miles on it with the noise and everything is still ok.  Just sounds like crap coming off of idle.

One thing I found that did help is that the arm at the lower end of the clutch cable hit the muffler when adjusted for 75mm.  It rattled like crazy at 50-60mph in 5th.  I adjusted the clutch cable to pull the arm up from the muffler so letting the clutch lever snap out didn't make a clank on the pipe.  Probably about 70mm and then adjusted the screw that pushes on the clutch rod for the correct free play.

Doesn't seem like anything to get excited over.  Just a resonance thing at those low engine speeds.
