A little help with examining photos of a K75

Hey guys, I've been stalking around on this forum for a little over half a year now, but am finally in a position to possibly purchase my first K bike. I've read about what to inspect on K bikes in person, but I am just looking for someone intimately familiar with K75s to take a quick look at these photos and tell me if there is something obviously wrong other than the lack of dignity.

I guess you're aware this bike has been heavily modified from stock to be a cafe racer style. The bar on the back is where the PO hacked thru the frame that supports the rear cowl to remove it and the fender assembly. I hope you live in a drought-stricken area or at the first sign of moisture you're going to give new meaning to the term 'wetback' -- no racial overtones intended...just the having of a wet back.

Hard to say if there's anything 'wrong' but there's definitely a lot of stuff 'missing'. Looks like there's a lot of rattle can black paint, too, hard to tell from the pics. I guess the question would be -- what's your intention with this bike? Keep it as a cafe or modify t further?

Yeah, I understand the bike is heavily modified. The guy said he had a shop do the work and he non-opped it afterward because he hates the look and he's offered to sell it for rather cheap at $800 or so. It looks like almost all of the stock parts are there including the stock tail section, radiator shroud, and headlight.

I wouldn't be looking to return it to stock, so I am not too concerned with that. I'll probably have some sort of tail section welded back on and replace the seat with a basic flat seat to fit two people. Right now I am a bit short on money, so I can't afford to be too ambitious after getting it running. I would probably set aside $700 or so to get it street legal and safe.

Something wrong with the PO?

Where are you located? Could be more than you expect to make it street legal -- tail light, brake light, turn signals all depend wiring that the PO might have taken out. Mirrors, license plate bracket, on and on.

Yeah, the wiring is certainly a major concern. I don't see why a shop would have chopped that out though. The PO said he is the original owner and has put ~90k on it, but doesn't know about the servicing since he's always brought it to a shop apparently.. Hmm.

For two-up you'll have to deal with the missing rear pegs and footpeg plates too. Maybe they're in the pile of stuff that was removed. At $800 for the bike and $700 budget for making it legal maybe you'd be better off looking for a complete bike, even if a beater. In SoCal you cN probably find something for $1500 or less. This looks like a huge project to undo the existing project.

You might want to check out Tim Tyler's posts on his mods. He has non stock front turn signals and such. Nice work on his bike. Alternatively, you could think about buying it with all the spare original pArts parting the whole thing out since it's more than partially disAssembled anyway. You could probably make enough $$ to buy what you want that way. I'd not recommend parting out a perfectly good Kbike just for the $$ but is one is totally hacked anyway.

looks like no oil on the sightglass... i would not be able to walk if i put 90k on that thing...

i would ask to see the title and make sure its not a salvage title and i would check the frame and engine against the vin before giving this another look...

will need new suspension and tiors and all fluids at the least in attempt to make it road worthy... thats a couple grand minimum before turning a wheel...

id call the dmv to find what my outta pocket is gonna be to plate this thing... and call my insurance to see if and how much thats gonna be...

I'll never understand why someone would render a Kbike or any bike for that matter illegal for road use by removing everything necessary for inspection. What's it good for afterwards, riding around he back yard? I don't get it.

If I were there and had the cash I'd offer him $600 and once it was on the trailer I'd tell the PO to bite me and then sell it for parts.

Someone please do the Kbike community a favor and grab that thing for parts. Someone's going to make a killing on it and the PO has already trashed it. Don't let it fall into the hands of a professional scavenger!

I honestly haven't looked around at prices too much. Are we talking a complete part-out, or engine and then rolling frame? I'm more than willing to snatch it and part it out if there is actually such demand.

Past the point of return, but would be an interesting off-road type conversion....GS style?  engine bars, etc.

Go on ebay and check out what k75 parts are selling for. You'd make $800 on the drivetrain alone, assuming they're reasonable shape. And even if not, all those body parts, valve and crank cover, TPS, alternator....the list goes on and on. If you have a garage build some shelves and go to town.

I'd do it but Southwest would charge me too much to put it in the overhead and I'm sure some cranky f**k would complain.

The plastic may be the most valuable parts there.  K75s front blinkers can go for $70 each, the belly pan for a $100, etc.  This bike really shows the difference between custom builders and butchers.

Somebody's going to make a bundle on this douchebag's mistake. I know of a k100 that got similarly butchered near here. When I saw it i said to the guy, 'hey, cool' while my brain was screaming 'Douchebag!'
