87 K100RT Instrument cluster wiring
« on: November 14, 2014, 05:52:52 PM »
Hello all,
New to the board, have been a longtime reader and appreciate your collective knowledge on a lot of things I couldn't figure out myself, hopefully in time I can share something useful too.

I have a 1987 K100RT (the faring was missing when i bought the bike). Love this thing. Have been riding it for a few years now and am trying to wire up a simple low fuel LED light. In all of the schematics I see (including my guide book) it shows a brown/black and a brown/white wire coming from the fuel sensor into the instrument cluster. When i look at my harness it looks like i have three brown wires?! I am missing something here? Does anyone have experience with wiring a low fuel light or this wiring? Thanks in advance.

Justin

As you have a -87you will find a white, yellow, green and brown wire at your fuel tank Connector.
The white wire is grounded when the fuel level gets low.

You will also find this wire among the wires going to the instrument cluster...I'll guess you don't have the
have the genuine instrument on the bike anymore.....which have a own circuit which delays the signal.

If so, be prepared that Your warning light will og on/off/on/off/on when you're around the level where
the signal kicks in (5 liters left).

Thanks Inge, I checked a couple of the wiring diagrams and in the 7 position pin on the instrument cluster harness is the white one, I believe i have the right one now (originally I had the other white wire from the harness which was for special extra items which kept the light on regardless of tank volume).  Thank you much for the input!   :mm

The other white wire going instrument cluster is for the high beam warning lamp.

Your machine seem difficult to ride like that. I'm in California too, but my bike is right side up.  :hehehe
