95K11LT fuel rail--can't get it right
« on: June 11, 2011, 12:13:43 PM »
ARGH!!! Back on the K11 refurbishment as described on K11OG: two weeks ago we thought we had achieved success; replaced the 0-rings on the cleaned injectors (found one chipped; replaced them all). Over the last two weeks, left it naked and put about 150 miles on it with no problem.

So today we were going to finish the job and close up the bike. But when we started it up, it started to spew fuel from the injector that is #2 from the rear of the bike.

My question is this: how sensitive is the fuel rail? We possibly did two things wrong: (l) instead of running the return hose from the pressure regular to the tank back through the airbox hoses (between #1 and #2 from the rear), we bought it up under the TBs and over the fuel rail, leaving the return hose touching the fuel rail. Also, we did not insert the heavy foam piece that is between the block and the bottom of the fuel rail.

Would either of those contributed to twisting of the fuel rail and the subsequent leaking at the injector top?

We're going to explore one other possibility: that the pressure regulator is not working right, but we have to go get a pressure meter and so won't know about that until late this afternoon.

Thanks for any suggestions

Seat the injectors in the fuel rail first and then put them into the head.
Once I had a Collie pup. Dug a hole and covered him up. Now I sit there by the hour. Waiting for a Collie-flower.

What foam piece? I didn't see anything like that on my '94.

Also, my fuel regulator doesn't have the vacuum line shown in the fiche, just two fuel lines attached.

Good to know. Clymers just says "installation is performed in reverse order."

Maybe that's what's wrong.

Just kidding. Your bike doesn't have one.

Scott: the rigid foam piece is one of the four "engine heat screens, " #3 in the MAX BMW fiche 11-1829  It sits firmly between the block and the bottom of the fuel rail.

I had my injectors serviced (cleaning and repaint) and they were returned with new o-rings. I used a coating of motor oil on the o-rings. I pushed them into the fuel log first and then
aligned the injectors to the block. I tightened the fuel log bolts and that was enough to push the injectors into the block. After starting, I checked for leaks and there weren't any. It doesn't hurt to oil up the injector seats in the block. An oil soaked
Q-tip will do the trick.

Gotcha. I wasn't thinking that at all..........thought of some mount thingy I was missing. ;D

I think you have to pull the rail again, check the o-rings and install like Duck and harper suggest. Let us know.

And that leads to another issue, which is reinstalling those heat shields; they pulled out easily enough but I think getting them back in will be more challenging. Chopper Harris, in 2008, offered some advice, but his photos are no longer linked to it.

Any advice, cautions, would be appreciated; you may giggle, but keep that to yourself.

The heat shields are only rubber, they will fit with a little english. They may fit better if you use a little german instead. ::)
