clutch cable replacement on the road
« on: October 08, 2014, 03:30:23 PM »
I was quite pleased to have a spare while on the road with my brother near Saratoga Springs NY this weekend. I felt the clutch release a bit slowly and took a look at the cable. Maybe 2 strands were left at the point where the cable connects to the ball end in the handle. I had a spare, tied it to the clutch end of the old cable, pulled it through, and was back on the road in about 45 minutes.

Little brother no longer gives me crap about my ever-present tool/parts bag.

Another neat trick is to run 2 clutch cables side by side.  When one breaks the replacement is already there.  Keep the cylinder that anchors the cable in the hand lever lubed.  When it freezes up and won't rotate that's when the cable frays and breaks.  Mine broke at about 40,000 because of that, replacement has lasted 140,000+ and looks fine.

Mine broke at 42K miles, so it sounds like that's the going rate for clutch cables.

Well, I didn't lube, and this cable busted after 5K miles...a tough lesson to learn the hard way.....

I broke one and the barrel end went flying. Got a spare in the kit now...
