Removing ABS System From K100RS4v
« on: October 05, 2014, 12:32:17 PM »
Restoring 1992 K100RS4v project bike that followed me home a few weeks ago.  Outside of helping to lower the center of gravity I can't see having all that ABS claptrap on the bike.  Have removed the actuators, lines(to be replaced with stainless), sensors and "brain".  My problem is that the "brain" connector and wiring is part of the bike's main harness.

Has anyone ever done this tear off, and how did they handle the wiring issue?  As near as I can tell, I should be able to cut the wiring to the "brain" and pull the relay.  Other than the idiot light on the instrument package it looks like a totally independent system.  Is there anything else I need to know or do?

On my 95 absII I just wrapped the plug in electrical tape and tucked it under the tank. Nkt enough weight savings to bother with removing it Mines a little differnt but I just found the two relays that were clicking to blink the fault light before removing the brain and pulled them.
I was a bit concerned about just cutting the harness with the possibility of causing shorts later on down the road. If I ever strip the bike down I'll lay the harness out and remove all the wiring at that point and that will also free up a spot in the fuse box.

I think that is the route I am going to follow for now.  Wrap the connector and ride like that for a while.

Still, the the old school enduro rider in me keeps telling me to cut the wires and finish the ends with crimp-on butt splices that would make returning to ABS fairly easy.  Simplify, simplify...  Probably next year.
