Hello motobrickers! My name is Bryan. I have been using your threads for a couple of years to get my bike in order, and I finally decided to register. I live in Maine, and about two years ago decided I wanted to try the whole motorcycle thing. Never having ridden before, I had no idea what I was doing at the time- and that topic is still debatable. I started searching craigslist and found a BMW K75 , a bike I had never heard of, nor can I say I even recognized, but I though it looked pretty cool (despite its very poor condition). I went to look at it, not knowing what to look for at all, and bought it- not running mind you- in a moment of pity for it. It was covered in dirt, dented up pretty badly, front fender plastic gouged badly, bald tires, windshield brackets with no windshield, 3 out of 4 turn signals cracked up and dangling- and that just what was visible. So $800 later it was in my truck and headed home. I had it running poorly within two days. A month later I took a motorcycle safety course and licensed up. I wound up doing a lot of ebaying to get things in order, and had to buy quite a few parts from the dealer down the road. Here is a list of what I can remember doing mechanically:
- Replaced all lighting
- Replaced Alternator
- Replaced alternator "monkey nuts"
- Replaced Starter
- Replaced Fuel Pump
- Replaced Fuel Injectors with newer reconditioned Boche Type II's
- Replaced wind screen
- Replaced all filters/fluids
- Final Drive spline lube 3x
- Replaced Fork seals
- Replaced Clutch friction disc
- Replaced Rear Main Seal
- Replaced head Bearings
- Replaced Several Relays
- Replaced cracked up rear cowling
- Replaced Ignition Switch
- Spark Plugs and Wires
- Fuel Lines
- Breather Tube
- Air Filter
- Clutch and Throttle Cables
- Replaced miscellaneous rusty hardware with Stainless
- Rebuilt Gas cap w/New seals and striped pealing coating/polished
more cosmetic stuff done last spring
- Striped tank- extracted dents- fixed pin holes, bondo- bondo- bondo, then icing finishing cream, epoxy prime x2 then basecoat x2 then clear x3 (got to set up a paint booth in garage which was pretty fun)
- New badges and K75 Tag
- New tires
- New Din socket
- New to me used saddle bags
- sanded and painted engine/cam covers- brushed out the highlights with scotch bright
- New reflectors
- stripped and painted exhaust heat shield
- buffed out pipe on bench wheel
- replaced grips
- New Kevlar heat shielding under tank- and all new mounting rubbers/ low seat yolk mounting clips
I would say all in all- it has been a fun project over the past two years, and I know the bike quite well. I had never actually written all of that down before, and am a little shocked. Anyway, the bike has 79,000 miles, and runs like a top. I love it dearly. Two months ago, I took it on my first ever longish ride (1,200 Miles) around the entire coastline of Nova Scotia- Cape Breton and the Cabot trail were amazing. I camped all the way, and was very glad to have the tragkorbs. My best friend of 15 years came with me, on his 97 Shadow Spirit 1100, which was not packed nearly as concisely as the k75 I must say, but he was great company. He past away on the 18th after a 19 month battle with Pancreatic cancer. It was pretty hard. I was told by his brother the other day that he had left me his bike, so now I have my next project lined up. Anyway, that's my .02. I do have some little questions, but I'll find the right areas for them. I've added some random picture of some cosmetic work and the bike nearly done. Cheers!
