Stupid rear wheel bolts question
« on: September 06, 2014, 08:36:16 PM »
Ok, so I've finally got hold of a paralever rear end - from a K1100RS I believe.

Anyway, I have these parts (random image from the web, I shall replace at some point if required)

So I have there - the usual flat spacer, 4 normal wheel bolts and a 5th bolt with a big spacer/cup thingy. Obviously it goes in the middle of the FD output but for what purpose?

I got a wheel with the stuff, and the wheel has a centre cap. The cap fits in and locks in place as I would expect it to. If the spacer/cup thingy is outside of the wheel the trim cap wouldn't fit.

Someone will know :2thumbup:

Big ring is a mount for the hub cap.  I use mine too.

If it goes on like: FD > wheel > spacer/ring/thingy then I have a hub cap off something else - probably an R. The front of the cap looks the same, but obviously I can't see the back of the one pictured there.

The hub cap I have has a long clip that engages straight into the middle of the wheel rim, putting that 'mount' in means the hub cap won't fit.

I'll get some pictures later to show it...

It's possible you don't have the correct cap.  There are two lengths for the clip, a short one:

and a long one:

If you have a three-spoke rear rim, the short one fits.  I believe the long reach clip is for the snowflake wheels, or possibly different series of bikes as you pointed out.

I have a 4.5j18 3 spoke wheel, and a long reach clip which fits in fine.

I do have the 'original' cap from my Y spoke rear, which isn't long enough for the 3 spoke without the cup/mount, but is the wrong size for use with the cup.....

Seems that although the wheels are very interchangeable between models and series, the various trims got a little peculiar.

Both caps is for the three spoke rims, the long clips for the monolevers which uses only four bolts,
and the short clips for the paralevers which uses five bolts.

Thanks guys :2thumbup:

Now, if I were to omit that 5th centre bolt and just use the 4 'normal' ones with the cap I have on the K11 para rear, is there likely to be any problem? i.e. is the middle hole 'blind' so I won't get oil out and dirt in?

If you have the cap with the long clips (in Robert's Picture), then you need only four bolts.

On models which don't use the fifth bolt the hole is blinded With a plastic plug, to protect it from
being filled up with rocks and small birds.
