no start cured by cleaning engine ground.
« on: September 01, 2014, 09:24:07 AM »
I just bought this bike a month ago and haven't had bikes for ~30 years so...

I was coming home from work and BLAH-BLAH-VROOM-BLAH-VROOM-BLAH-BLAH - very jerky and surgy and no power. Coasted to side.  Started - seemed to rev.  got going same thing. got it home - cleaned up a few things (under tank ground connections) and took it for a spin.  Seemed good!!

Next day - wouldn't start.  Would crank and turn over - would never catch.  Took out a couple plugs - both seemed the correct colour and dry - had spark.  Wouldn't start.  LOCKED UP THE STARTER RELAY BECAUSE BATTERY VOLTAGE DROPPED.  FUX!

Went to Canadaian Tire (automotive super store in canada), got a battery tender.  Had to take off the rear fender to get the battery out.  Dropped a screw from the tail piece.  Had to call wife to find it. Dismantled the relay and just touched the contacts with the finest emery I had (not very fine) and ordered a new one online (Ebay $40) and put the bike together (with old relay) and put the battery in and cleaned a bunch of stuff.

What is that rusty bolt that goes directly from the battery negative terminal to the engine?  Engine ground you say!  Oh! So that's where it is/. I cleaned it - used dialectic grease to keep it clean and after final assembly - vroom-VROOM-VROOM-VROOM!!!

The bike runs smoother and idles better.  I am going to guess that a weak signal finally prevented the computer from doing it's job properly and the bike wouldn't start. maybe after I cleaned the other grounds, the resistance at the engine ground increased where the computer barfed.

This is my first post of trying to help others.  I hope it wasn't too long.  I do not mind criticism.  I would like to help others in the same way I get so much help from forums.  Should I just have said - I cleaned the engine ground and cured my no start?

Cheers from Toronto.

Good advice to clean the ground connections before troubleshooting electrical problems.

I work in a marina on the other side of Lake Ontario(Youngstown) working on sailboats.  It's safe to say that more than 50% of the electrical problems we encounter are the result of bad ground connections.  Usually at the main ground from the battery to the engine block.  For some reason, this is the last place most owners look when something doesn't work.

At Autozone (our version of Canadian Tire), I got a ground cable for a riding mower for my K. It's about equal to 5 of the ground cable that came on the bike -- cheap insurance against grounding problems.
