I know, what's an airhead question doing in a brick forum? Well, Motobrickers know all.
I'm a K bike guy (currently 86 K75 project) but also own an 72 /5. I'm not an online member of any airhead forums, have no reputable airhead mechanic nearby so thought I'd post this here.
On my 72 R60/5 I find the throttle grip ‘sloppy’. With the bike sitting before a ride, you turn it and it appears to function as I expect and feels fine. There’s resistance on the two carb cables almost immediately and of course snap back properly. The lock screw is fine and its not binding on the handlebar.
Take it out for a ride and the grip itself seems to get sloppier. I’m finding there is play in the grip before it starts to pull the carb cables. Awfully annoying when tooling around that I have to turn the grip what seems like a quarter turn (it may not be that much but feels like it) til I get the cable resistance to engage the carbs.
Any thoughts? Are the cables themselves hooped? Are the teeth on the throttle tube and/or the mated teeth on the cable wheel worn that the teeth aren’t meshing well? I know we’re only talking fractions of an inch here but if all are worn that may cause play?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
