1991 K100RS Rescue

Hi everyone, New to the site and just bought a K100RS for $500. It has no brakes, two flat tires, dead battery and a small leak on the gas tank that was patched with JB weld. Gas tank has been empty for a long time but the engine oil looks like new. :) It has been sitting outside with a tarp over it for over 5 years. Has 45K miles on it and plan is to getting it running, rebuild the brakes, then little by little work on the cosmetics. This is going to take a while.

Removed the tank and filler neck to inspect. Rust and corrosion on the fuel pump and gas guage sending unit. Removed the JB weld from the tank and found a nice hole caused by corrosion. Isn't alcohol in gas great?

If it were mine I'd part it out on ebay and buy a bike in better shape with the $$.

Now for the good. Borrowed a battery from a Honda ATV. Pulled my Vanagon into the garage next to the K100. Ran a fuel line from the fuel pump on the Vanagon to the fuel rail on the K100. Ran a return line from the K100 back to the gas filler pipe on the Vanagon. Jumpered the fuel pump relay and now have fuel delivery for the K100. Had to crank it a few times but it started up and idled. Engine sounds tight, no bubbles in the coolant. I have not even removed the spark plugs yet and the gas in the Vanagon is a year and a half old. With new plugs, have the injectors cleaned and fresh gas it will run great I think.

It's going to be a pain finding a driver to follow you in the Vanagon every time you want to go for a ride.  :hehehe

Nobody has any sense of adventure... Parts are cheap, rebuilding is fun - if everyone broke up every rescuable k because of minor issues like these there'd only be 6 left...

At least now I know I have a running engine to work with. I am going to have the tank TIG welded and then stuff a new fuel pump, filter (which is plugged up) hoses and a new gauge sending unit. Add a battery and the bike will be running. Not bad for something that sat over 6 years. I will check the valves and complete the  major servicing on it. Including new drivetrain seals. Then will have to rebuild the brake system.  I have already checked into the cost of parts I will need and will still be far below a $2500 to $3000 K bike. Also just because a bike is currently running with no issues doesn't mean the parts I will be replacing won't have to be replaced either withing a few years of purchasing. I will have the confidence that functional parts will be fresh for worry free riding. Off for vacation now and when I get back will be ordering parts.  :yes

There's nothing to say those perfectly functioning parts on a running bike won't fail on the way home from buying it either.....

Used bikes bought privately are always a gamble.

Superb work in getting her started and running! I am sure you'll do fine with the rest of the issues, sounds like you're determined and resourceful. I too bought a $500 K bike (an 88 K75S) and with another $300 or so, some scrounging around, plenty of elbow grease and some quiet evenings spent wrenching in the garage I now really enjoy taking the old girl out for a ride. I was out for a ride yesterday afternoon on her and went to Seabeck, WA near where we live. It was great and you'll have a great time with this as well. Keep at it!
