K1100 has stopped!
« on: June 30, 2014, 04:01:34 PM »
My 1995 K1100LT has been problem free since I got it 10 months ago, its always started fist prod on the button, and ran perfectly.
Over the last few rides, I've noticed an occasional missfire, just a stutter sort of thing, nothing much.
Today however, it went worse!  :yow
Setting off early for a 120 mile round trip, all was well, until, after a short high speed blast, the engine cut out for a couple of seconds, then fired back up, although it still felt a bit 'off'
Parked up at the bike shop, went in and bought myself a pair of Alpinestars "Gran Torino Waterproof" touring boots, cracking kit BTW, £120 bargain
Went for some fodder, got back to bike, now stone cold....and it wouldn't start: motor spinning but no fire.
Had a prod at the wiring connector twixt fuel sender/pump feed and loom...bike fired up a treat....but soon after cut out, coasted to a halt, then decided to 'bump' start it before i stopped, it fired up!
Then, 5 miles later, stopped at junction, bike died again, this time no wiggling of wires would help.
Rang AA breakdown (the auto asscn, not the other) guy duly turned up, no live at coils, or the little block next to coils, no spark at plugs.
As the man rubbed his chin and pondered, I wiggled the wires from the RH switch, and it started! So set off again, did 5 miles, but this time it died and stayed died.
I've pulled apart and cleaned every wiring connector, check for physical damage every inch of the bike, nothing  :dunno2:
Sooo, anything thats obvious to you guys, any electric/electronic part thats a common fail?
I'm stuck now, not a clue what to do next!  :musicboohoo:

Just to add to this, the fuel pump primes up a treat, no problems in the tank! I think its an electrical issue, ie. no spark at the plugs

You mean the Motronic 'brain'...unplugged the big connector, checked, all the pins are nice and clean, gave it a quick spray with WD-40, made no difference....

Normally I'd suggest checking the side stand safety switch, but if that was bad you would not have any fuel pump, and you say that the fuel pump primes........

Next suggestion would be to check the connections for the HES sensors. If the HES doesn't send rotation signal to the motronic, you won't have spark at the plugs, or activate the fuel pump relay

HES= Hall Effect Sensor

It is at the front of the engine behind the "T" shaped cover. I senses crankshaft rotation.

Here's what one looks like.

The connector is probably under the fuel tank in the "rat nest" of wires.......

Thanks for that!  :2thumbup:
I'm used to working on cars, and had in my mind 'Hall Sensor Fault!'
With many cars, this part starts to cause problems by breaking down when hot, as the resistance increases...then when cold, it starts to work again. I'm really hoping this is the fault....but how did wriggling the wiring around the handlebars give a short term repair...just coincidense I hope!
