Found and Fixed Specific Cause of K75 Sticky Throttle
« on: May 21, 2014, 07:48:31 AM »
RE:  1987 K75C throttle cable started sticking two weeks ago......When I relaxed my grip on the throttle twist grip it would not go back to idle sometimes...Sometimes became often....Something had to be done..  After many false starts on my own, I hired a wrench guy to come over to the house and have a look.   He tried a number of things and none worked.  Finally he noticed that the plastic coated cable at the throttle-end of the cable was binding against the side of the wheel near the throttle body..He trimmed off 5/8th of an inch or so of this coating (with much difficulty - it really adheres tightly to the metal) and that solved the problem....This may or may not be a heads up, but wanted to share the experience...

You should buy a new throttle cable, Bob.

Keep the old one in a tragkorb as a backup.

Tim, thank you..I am thinking the same thing....I also want to buy a new twist griep assembly and the throttle box up top and all its innards.....the metal of most/all parts shows wear, some roughness and just aging from years of use....I'll see what the BMW dealer can offer parts wise..

I've had to go through this a few times in the 330K on my '87 T. Replacing all that is pricey. The gear assembly should've been made of steel instead of aluminum.

Have a good look at what TB rack you have and what cable was fitted. IIRC a newer cable doesn't properly fit an older (pre-recall-change) rack. Might sound a bit cryptic, but if you look in parts lists or at MotoBins/Motorworks etc you'll see that there are two different types of throttle cables (not accounting for the different lengths). Don't know if this is applicable to the K75 as well (it is for the early K100s). As above, I wouldn't play with this and just get a new throttle cable.
