Hello all, I just bought my first BMW a 94 K75 and I love the thing. It seems to run and drive fine, I'm devastated because I just came upstairs from changing all the fluids and low and behold stuck to the end of the magnet on my transmission drain plug was a ball, is this my neutral detent ball??? there were some metal shavings stuck to the plug. I've been driving the bike and it seems to run and shift fine, not making any grinding sounds or anything. MY question is what exactly does the detent do? keep it from slipping out of neutral? Do I need to rip this thing down? will it hurt to keep driving like this? I was thinking of doing a spline lube anyway. Any input would be appreciated, thanks to all in advance.

How large is the ball? The ND ball is 6mm I think.

Add some pictures. Measure it exactly, can give us a better idea. The detent ball is 6mm. There could have been a spring there too, but not for sure.

It might be a ball from one of the bearings. It would be larger than 6mm, unless it is from the throwout bearing or clutch pushrod bearing.

Fine shavings are okay. Normal on a K: there's no oil circulation or filtration on the transmission. Feel them between your fingers. They are a problem if you can feel chunks.

The concern with continuing to drive like this is a transmission (and the rest of the driveline) lockup. Before you ride it more, you should figure out the problem.

If it's the detent ball only, probably not an issue, though finding neutral could become very hard. The spring may be acting as a detent, but it is not hardened or rounded for this purpose. There is some concern that parts could break off and become jammed. Most likely this would not happen, you'd just end up with more junk on the bottom.

If it's not the detent ball, you could be in for trouble. If it is for one of the major bearings, I would replace the transmission before riding more.

If it is for the throwout bearing, you can actually check and replace that from the rear of the bike, with minimal issue.

have to dig out the calipers in the morning to measure it but what other ball could it be?? I really need to know if it will hurt the tranny to be driving without it, again it rides and shifts fine and I don't hear any grinding, I wanted to rip it apart this winter anyway to lube my splines just wondering if I can drive it like this until then. Going measure it now I'm pretty sure it's not a bearing and no large chucks of metal were in the fluid. Be right back, Thanks guys!!!

6 mm it is, if it is the detent will it hurt to be driving like this, gears are shifting fine and finding neutral has not been a problem. Again, going to take it apart to do a spline lube this winter. Thanks again for the input guys.

Are you in the southern hemisphere, because winter is a long way away up here :)

Is there up and down play in your foot shifting lever? If there is that's a good excuse to open up the gearbox and fix that, and figure out what kind of mess is in there.

I don't know exactly what the ND ball does, but I'd hate to have the bike slip from neutral into gear when I wasn't expecting it.

I would dedicate a weekend, lube your clutch splines and put a new ND ball and spring back in the gear box.

I know that's the right thing to due but didn't want to hear it, hasn't popped into gear or neutral the last 50 miles I drove it today right before I dropped the fluid. I'm in New Jersey. not much riding time until winter.

I'm about 2 hours north of Princeton and no, its a k 75 Standard, no ABS and naked as they come. I love the way it rides and looks. It has 14,000 original miles that's why I don't understand how this happened and don't want to hurt it.

Are you serious??? I know people that have said that dealers do crazy stuff like charging for spline lubes and such and they never open the thing up. I just took it for another drive this morning and the thing seems fine to me, the gears shift smooth, finding neutral isn't a problem at all and it has not just popped in and out of gear at all. I don't hear anything grinding, nothing, it seems fine, I opened the drain again and no new shavings and the fluid is clean. That would be awesome!!! I know the guy I bought it from took it to the dealer for an oil change, so maybe........You just made my day!!!!

If you know the previous owner, contact them and ask if any transmission work was done and tell them why you're asking.  They may know something they "forgot" to tell you.

The only work that was done was the oil change, the bike has 14,000 original miles, it looks brand new, all of the original seals can be seen around all of the case seals and what not, the thing is spotless! and it drives like new. I wouldn't put it past a dealer to do that. I'm going go with it until I do my spline lube in 2 months, hey, I pay for towing on my insurance so what the heck and a tranny is not to costly and I've rebuilt quite a few on my cars, just new to the street bike thing. Thanks for all your help guys!!

Get on your knees behind the bike and look into the tail light housing from the bottom where the license plate light shines. If the bike really has 14k miles the inside of the taillight housing will be pristine white. If the speedometer has been swapped the white plastic inside the tail light housing will be yellow from the years of heat of the tail light bulb.

Tim I just checked, it is pristine white, no sign of any yellowing at all. Thanks for the  advice on that one, again, the bike looks new and none of the engine seals or any others have been broken.

Looks like an honest 14K mile bike to me.  No real wear on the peg plates and the tail light looks like new

rodger all that...

the peg rubbers would show wear... butts the peg plates would show wear too...

with these three photos and previous documentation... im leaning to 14k actual too... even though the left side shows wear... the photos are too close for me to really tell...
