Fuel Pump Relay always on, Starter won't engage
« on: May 05, 2014, 01:08:31 AM »
So here's my problem. I've done some recent work on my 1987 k75. Changed clutch, lubed the splines, change the headlights. After doing all this. the bike started no problem. However, at some point after, when I tried starting her, it wouldn't start. At first it fired fine. But after a few other tries it gave me nothing. Now what I've noticed is that the Fuel Injection Relay will engage as soon as I turn the key to the ON position. If i hit the ignition switch nothing happens. If the fuel pump is connected, then the fuel pump will engage and send fuel down to the engine. But it won't stop. I've checked the relays and they are fine. They both fire and have continuity.

Some things to consider. I've changed the instrument cluster to one from a K100. For some reason, sometimes when I turn the key to the on position, the instrument panel lights will not turn on. Then after forcefully engaging 1st gear, the lights will go on. These are only the LED lights that power back lights, nothing else (the same happened with the original k75 Instrument cluster). Also, since I changed the headlight, they now only turn on when I press the high beams. I disconnected the normal light and during a lapse of concentration the terminal touched another cable and it started smoking so i removed the cable altogether.

Any ideas on where and what to do? I've exhausted everything I know and am out of sorts and very frustrated about this problem.

Thanks to all in advance for helping out.

Welcome.

The fuel pump relay coil is always powered as long the ignition is on,
And the ignition ECU manage this relay by grounding the coil.

So it seems like your ignition ECU is the problem, or the wire between the relay
and the ignition ECU is shorted to ground.
Try to disconnect the ignition ECU, and see if the fuel pump stops.
The ignition ECU you find behind the steering head.

And as your starter relay also don't function....this can also be related to a
malfunctioning ignition ECU, as the starter relay coil is grounded by the ignition ECU.
Try to ground the brown/red wire at the starter relay, if the starter then functions
the problem is the ignition ECU.

Good luck.

Thanks Inge. So I went out and got another ECU. That's not the problem. The FI keeps firing regardless. I disconnect the the wires that got from the ECU to the Starter relay and the FI stops firing then. When I depress the ignition switch the FI engages and my fuel pump starts. So it seems that the Starter Relay seems to think that the ignition switch is pressed at all times and it's what's firing the FI. Don't know if that's the case but that that's what it seems.

I don't know where to go from here. I've tried to find a ground somewhere in the circuit but I'm having no luck. My load shed relay also doesn't engage when I turn the ignition on. Don't what that's about.

Strange issue this.....the only thing I can think of at the moment is that you got a internal short in the starter relay(which is quite rare), and this acts the same way as you push the starter button.

I'll then guess you disconnected the connector for the signal wires at the starter relay?
Measure if you got 12V present at the signal socket on the starter relay, with the wires disconnected.
