Gremlins in the electricity ?
« on: April 29, 2014, 05:39:47 AM »
Hi... first post here, and hoping it will answer some questions.
I picked this bike up the other week after eyeing it up for a bit, (link to the start of the saga... http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=965775 ) and I'm still no further ahead.
The warning light on the dash stays on permanently. I've replaced the brake light bulb, checked wiring for breaks (there was an old break by the footpeg which has been repaired previously), cleaned the brake wiring plugs, checked fuses, sworn a little bit, and walked away in disgust  :dunno2: There is no high beam either (replaced headlight bulb too). Anything else I should be looking for ?
Also... is there somewhere I can get a wiring diagram on line or a pdf fixit manual ?
And what do these relays do ?

I figured #4 was the starter solenoid  :2thumbup:

Any and all help greatly appreciated  :popcorm

The dash warning light can stay on if either one of your brake light switches, doesn't work(and the bmu can fail). After you start the bike you have to "test" both brakes to clear the light.
Like Johnny said above, what's the year/model of you ride.
Check the lieberry for stickies of what you are looking for. The search box is your friend.....

Oops... I forgot that important piece of information. It's an 88 K100.
I've tried the "brake test" but there is no power to the tail light. All the wiring seems o.k. visually.
Thanks for the welcome and replys

The bulb monitor also checks the tail light. With no power to it, the warning light should be on.

Right... Quick update.
I'm still no further ahead with the brake light/warning light issue, but I took a break from the electikery and changed the oil in the final drive, greased the splines and I'm in the process of doing engine/gearbox oil changes. How much oil goes in the final drive ? I put 250ml in and it was overflowing, is this enough ?  :dunno
Also...
Any idea what these 2 wires are, spewing out of the instrument cluster ?  :dunno I also have no speedo, could they be part of the problem ??

Aaaaand...
My German is not so good. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th from the bottom, what are they for ?  :dunno . I think I can work out the other ones

I seem to be using this one >  :dunno a bit

Then something isn't correct....it should be 250ml, and that should be just below the lowest female thread
for the fill plug at the FD.

These two wires is non genuine, where are they connected.

It's o.k. I had the right amount of oil in the final drive  :2thumbup:
The wires weren't connected to any thing. I thought they may have had something to do with the speedo not reading.
Does any one have recommendations for an aftermarket speedo ? I'd like to replace the stock ones for something a little smaller  :popcorm

I found a couple of loose/broken wires, it looks like they go to position 21-24 on the unit. I have a brown and yellow which I assume are the speedo wires and a green/blue one which could be any thing  :dunno2:
Can someone give me an idea which goes where ? Please  :2thumbup:
I guess the big red and black wires will remain a mystery, seems to go alright without them anyway  :yes

Pin 21   blue/green    signal from speedo to flasher relay.....self canceling.
Pin 22   yellow           signal from the speedo sensor at the FD.
Pin 23   brown           ground for the speedo sensor at the FD.
Pin 24   gray/blue      instrument illumination.

I'm back  :yes
I've been playing around with the Brick a bit and riding it too  :riding:
It's gone from this...

to this...

Now I have another electrical question....
Is there an online wiring diagram ?
I'm about to install a new speedo, this one >>https://www.dan-moto.com/DM_INT/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=27_69&products_id=389&zenid=7q1afqien8i235t6d5lvt5jsa3

Now, I'd like to just tap into the existing wiring if possible, so far everything I've done is able to be reversed so it can be returned to standard, and I'd like to stick with that theme  :yes
Is there anything I need to look out for, or any hints/tips/tricks ?

TIA
J.....

Doubt it will be much different than the K75 Wiring Diagram.

Go to the "K100 forum.com" do a search with the keyword "Acewell" and you would find a lot of info about
fitting aftermarket instruments.

:2thumbup: What johnny said. Some reeeealy usefull stuff there

It seems it's not going to be a "plug 'n'play" thing. My previous electrikery experince is just simple single cylinder jap bikes  so this will be quite a learning experience

Perhaps I should start a project thread ??

I'd follow the thread. I'm dreading the day the electrics on my no bike start getting wonky -- I have no experience and find the whole thing intimidating, so following someone else's travails would be of great interest to me.
