No fuel light or gauge reading
« on: April 15, 2014, 05:20:03 PM »
As title...my K1100LT 1995, no fuel warning lamp (I've seen it working so know the 'top end' is fine), and nothing showing on the gauge  :dunno2:
How can I check for faults? A used fuel sender is going to cost me £40 and is non-returnable, so rather than just guess, I'd like to try to test for the fault!
I can work a multi-meter to do the basics, any mechanical work is easy but electrics still confuse me a bit....after over 33 years building bikes and cars!
Hope you can point me in the right direction, thanks

Start by checking the connections on the bottom of the tank..

See if these instructions help you out:

Testing Fuel Level Sender

The resistance checks can be carried out without removing the sender unit from the tank by testing at the connector between Ground and Fuel Level pins.  Here is the colour coding:
Green/White = +12V for pump (pin 15)
Brown = Ground (pin 31)
White = Low fuel indicator (pin W)
Yellow = Fuel level (pin G)

Thanks for the replies peeps! I already removed the connector and soldered the wires together as the connector was faulty. How do I check if the sender is working? I did get a low volt reading that changed as i moved the sender arm up and down, but right away the reading stuck at 7.6V no matter how i moved the float about. Bit lost now as the needle on the gauge wont move, the light won't come back on and I'm not sure what to test!

How do I check if the sender is working?

Measure the continuity to ground for both the level gauge sender connection and low level warning lamp.
Both is connects to ground via wiper contacts and the float arm hinge/shaft/axle....where I guess you
find the reason to your problem.

To check the gauge and lamp function, ground each of the circuits at your modified tank connector.

Well, I'm pretty sure the sender unit is whats at fault, so I've ordered a guaranteed used one from Motor Works up here in The North, very good price as well!
The Easter holiday has delayed things for a few days but it will be with me soon, I'll keep you updated!  :2thumbup:
I really need to get it sorted...I'm going to the top of the UK for my summer holiday: The Shetlands here I come!  :yes
