Pinion or bevel gear seal in final drive
« on: March 16, 2014, 07:16:32 PM »
Hi everybody. I just pulled my final drive and found a pool of gear oil in the nose.

Has anyone here ever replaced this seal? (I presume it's item 4 here: http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/Diagrams/B0004418.png?v=04302013 )

I replaced my ring gear seal a couple years ago, got lots of good advice on the web -- but I'm not finding anything on this little number. Does anyone have any experience to share?

It is difficult. The nut that is at the end of the driveshaft splines must be removed to get the collar that holds the seal out. This nut has a high torque, and also has red locktite on the threads. The fixture to hold the final drive and keep it from turning is expensive. You can make a substitute if you have a welder, but I would suggest having a shop with the factory tools do the job.

Thanks pfls. I saw a thread on another forum where someone said, "Just let it leak." Now I start to understand why....
