Greetings from a land Downunder
« on: December 09, 2013, 01:04:53 AM »
Hi,
Just joined up forum and would like to introduce myself.  My name is Andrew and I have just returned to the fold after buying a 1997 K100 LT.  It's been a few years since I have owned a bike and my last one was a 1992 K100 LT - which must have been about 7 years ago.  Had bikes off on and before that but mostly Hondas.  Once you have owned a Beemer, you understand the attraction - although I must say, I haven't had the chance to ride an R series yet and always had a soft spot for the R100RT - the last of the old fashioned boxers.  I have had the K1100 for a week now and love it.  It's only got 72,000 km on it and is in really good condition.  Bit worried about the temp gauge on it as it seems to get a bit high in heavy traffic with lots of traffic lights (over 3/4's) but drops back down to about midway once you get on the motorways and get a bit of speed and airflow happening.  It's got all the K quirks that I remember from my K100 such as the heatwave and the false neutrals but it's all part of the fun.  The Missus has never been on the back of a bike before so that's going to be fun but once I have got used to the beast, I will stick her on the back for a spin and see what happens - might be riding solo for a long time!
Not too sure of the forum rules, but other forums I am on have unwritten rules that it's a good idea to post a piccie or two.  Which I have done.

Hope to meet some friends and like minded people here on the forum.
cheers!

Welcome aboard! good looking bike but I'm confused by the bike pictured. It doesn't match what I have seen in the US. It looks like a 85-92 K100s side panels/battery covers and tail but the Fairing and Fork look K1100LT.  Is that the 97 and how they come in Australia?

Thanks for the heads up - I didn't know that the back end was different.  The reason is that once upon a time this bike belonged to the New South Wales Police Force.  A hell of a lot of the K100's and K1100's did in Australia.  They equipped them out as single seaters with a flashing blue light on the back where the passenger seat goes and different luggage systems.  Once they reach 40 or 50 thousand kms they get sold off at auctions to the general public who turn them back into tourers.  When I bought the bike last week it came with spare lower fairing panels which are white - I gather they are the original police ones.  But yes, it's a 97 K1100!

Ahhh well that explains it!

Thanks for the clarification.

Ive seen other police bikes that had different knee panels. On a Civilian K1100 LT the side panel extends and slots into the knee panels The handles on the tail cowl are also not there. Those parts look sourced from a 100 on your bike.

Ah - suddenly it becomes clear!  Looks like I might have to get myself the bits and restore it back to K1100 specs.
Just for the record, this is probably what it once looked like - minus the big burly copper sitting astride it of course!

It's just cosmetic and it makes it and interesting conversation piece. I'd leave it, looks fine.
