Switching kick stand sides
« on: December 01, 2013, 10:22:01 PM »
So after my bike is done, I want to remove the center stand for a cleaner look. Something I noticed though was that after being on the side stand for a couple days when I started it there was a ton of smoke that came out the exhaust. Is that a common thing for these bikes or could my rings toast? Anyways I thought it would be cool to put the kick stand on the other side of the bike so it would show off the single sided swing arm and keep the oil from getting into the combustion camber. Thoughts?

Froader.... the amount of oil burned is dependant on what year you bike was made.

Starting 6/88 BMW changed the piston ring design. Per http://www.largiader.com/k75/khistory.html
The early models smoke a lot, the later models will still smoke some, just not as much.

Yes, I also have heard of modifying the side stand to the right side. Not sure that I have seen a good written document describing how to do it though.

My 88 does the same thing so if I'm off the bike for more than a few minutes I put it on the center stand. I also put it on the center stand when I don't ride for a few days. It also makes changing all the fluids easier on the center stand than on the side stand. IMO it is best to keep the center stand and maybe dress it up. I have also looked at swapping the side stand to the right side, but have not seen that many people that have done it yet but give it a try and post the results for the rest of us.

Good Luck!

I always make sure I have a clear gettaway BEFORE I start the bike.  Then fire it up and dump the clutch and leave 'em gasping!
