Power loss and reprograming
« on: November 05, 2013, 02:48:37 AM »
A question on battery removal. I have 1994 K1100RS and I thought I saw a note in the manual that if the battery is disconnected (Like for winterization or replacement) you will have to go to a dealer and get the bike's ECU or throttle sensor reprogrammed.
Is this true for this model?? If so what do you do every winter if you don't have the option of leaving it on a charger(no power @ storage facility)?

It's bull........The only thing that would need re-programming would be a radio unlock code on an LT or RT.

You will be just fine with an RS.

True, a kbike is a 'dumb' bike. The ecu is hard coded into a chip, so loss of power is no problem at all

Worst thing that may happen is you trip the ABS light. Search ABSII reset. It's easy to do. Just need a little wire and to find the diagnostic plug and ground a pin out for 30seconds while holding the ABS button.
Fact is now that I have told you that you may know more about resetting it then your local dealer. My local dealer didn't know and doesn't have a computer that works with k1100 or older

Thanks Guys

I only have the Clymer Manual and it makes you think, "Where they come up with some of the things they put in the manual," and my other beef with them(Generic Manuals) they often just skip steps assuming the guy who is working on it is a mechanic or something and has done this job before and just needs a refresher :dunno :musicboohoo:

johnny: as for the solar charger; it won't work as I have put the bike away until money and time allow to continue working on this little brain teaser (K1100RS). It is in one of those commercial storage units(inside) which unfortunately doesn't have any available sun light or power outlets.
