Author Topic: Gear shift lever, room for boot? (Read 20915 times)

It does not seem like there is enough room between the footpeg and gear shift lever to fit a boot. I measure the space between the two at barely over 4". The space is fine for tennis shoes etc. But when I put my boots on it's a very tight fit and I have trouble even getting my boot tip into the space. Is there an extended length shift lever, or.....?????

I measured the K11 at 4.5" I once pulled the lever off and moved it one tooth up but I started missing some up shifts......YRMV.

Hadn't thought of that. Yes, Maybe moving it up a notch will do it. I'll give it a try.

Although the teeth are tiny it amplifies quite a bit at the end of the lever. I moved one tooth and had trouble engaging on the upshifts and had to lift my foot off the peg to get on top of it to down shift......lasted one day like that. Let us know if it works for you.

I'm experiencing the same issue, of not having room for a boot, to shift. My bike is a '85 K100RS. It's on my list of things to investigate and experiment. I'm not having and issue with the boot on my other bike.

Makes me wonder if my shift levers have been rotated up one notch.
I don't have any trouble making up shifts with my boots, or getting them in there.
But if I just hop on to run down to the local gas station for some milk I'll wear my tennis shoes, and then I have trouble with missed up shifts from time to time.

You could also try installing a shift lever from a K1100. That has about 1/2" more toe clearance.

That's a good idea, Duck, as mine measured 4.5 also. Should be cheep, too, if there was a easy source for good, used BMW parts. ;D

Well the shaft line lines up with the lever gap. soooo. I must have some not so thick riding boots.
But I am also riding the 1100 as well.
Didn't know that the shift shaft is longer than the 75's.
I suppose that will be something I have to deal with if I get a 75 someday. (like put on the longer shaft.)

While we are on the topic of the shift shaft, can the shaft seal be replaced on the bike with out the tranny being dismantled?

I found a K1100 shift lever for $99, and as an added bonus it comes with the whole transmission. Can a K1100 trans be swapped into a K75s?

Hmmm, it looks like you overlaid the K75 lever on top of K1100. Aside from the shape of the K1100 arm being different, they look like the same distance from the output shaft hole to rubber covering. So it seems like the difference is the footpeg is probably a half inch further back on the 1100.

Yes, a K1100 trans will bolt right up to a K75. The only difference is that the K1100 trans has a slightly taller 5th gear - 1.67 vs. the 1.61 of a K75. You can't go the other way though because the K75 doesn't have the mounting tangs with a hole for the mounting paralever strut.

The K1100 shift lever does have a bit more toe clearance. It's shaped a bit differently in order to clear the heat shield over the header collector.

Cool, a 3.7% overdrive! I am tempted to buy that K1100 trans to keep as a spare and use the shift lever. Iit's only $99 and 30 minutes away. And, If I get a K1100, which I want to do......

Very interested in this subject! I'm loving my new-to-me 1993 K75RT, but am dearly missing the heel-toe shifter I had rigged up to my former bike (Suzuki VX800). I've searched these forums for info about this, but come up a blank. Any ideas?

Not enough room to fit a heel toe shifter. Unless you engineer a really weird shifter it would have to come down from the shaft then out and up and back. As I stated really weird. Please post a pic if you find a way.

I might have to try that. I've tried two positions on the shaft. With the first I could up shift well, but had to lift my foot from the peg to down shift. Moved it down one spline and got a compromise I can live with.
Still not nearly as slick as shifting the BSA. Maybe it's just using the wrong foot? :neener:

Here's a pic of the heel-toe shifter I rigged to my previous bike - a Suzuki VX800. It looks gerry-rigged, but I've ridden it like that for around 50,000 k.m. with no problems, and the action quickly became quite natural. Also, the toe of my left boot has thanked me for it many times - particularly when it rains! I'm going to have a shot at rigging up something similar to my BM. I'll post up my progress.

OK - here's a heel-toe shift I've now fashioned from a simple piece of gavanized steel, rigged and tested on my K75:

It's held in place on the regular gear shift by the rubber pad, and by the small bend you can see at the tip that prevents it sliding backwards. A small loop of black bungee cord holds it in place at the inboard edge of the footpeg. It works well, and is straight-forward to install.

maybe you could fit a Ural shifter. Forcing around the rocks and gravel that make up the Russian gearbox requires heel stomping force. Should work on dainty German tranny.
