New member and K1100LT intro

Hi, I'm new to the forum but have been coming here regularly for info on the brick. I won on ebay a 1995 K1100LT.   I just took delivery of the bike this last weekend and it has 38,000 miles. I've owned two other bricks in the past: a 1987 K100LT. 1999 K1200RS and I also am currently riding a 1996 VFR. Couple of questions about the new bike. 1. Is the windshield oem or aftermarket and does it look shorter than normal. It is tinted and has a curved cutout on the top edge. 2. My bike has S/S front brake lines, is this oem? 3. What is the name of this color? I can't find the color code any where on the bike. It looks light blue but researching on the net I only find a color from that time as Morea Green that looks similar. The bike was at a used motorsports dealer in Michigan where I bought it but the service records indicate it was purchased new in Alabama. Any one ever see it before? Anyway thanks for all the valuable info.

p.s. I have no idea if the splines have ever been done, should I consider doing them at this age/mileage?

Under the seat will be a sticker for the color.  707 is Morean green. It looks the same as mine.

That windshield is aftermarket. Not sure the brand but the cut is different then stock. A stock factory windshield is 14in from center botom to top.
There is a couple companies on eBay that sell new at heights up to 21 in if you need taller. $125-150. The saddle looks cut for somebody around 5'8" so I'm guessing the wind shield is probably around 10 in the center.

If you don't have a receipt for the splines being done its time. My 95 has over 40 and it was showing wear on the clutch.

My splines were done at 50K and everything looked like the factory had just put it together.
How does thay windshield work? Any buffeting at speed? I hated the factory shield and went with a +4" Parabellum. You can adjust the shield to blast in your face or raise it slightly to blast right over your head....no Jimmy Buffet.

I haven't got the bike licensed yet so haven't been able to try it out at highway speeds.
I'm 6' tall so it seems like it will be a little short. Will report after a good long ride.

Your close to my height. Id look at a 19-21 windscreen. Im leaning towards the 19 myself. After 300 miles yesterday I'm over the 14. Its good for about 55 and then its just not tall enough. For a while I was crouching down trying to limit the buffeting when I was trying to make some time up and running faster. Made all the difference in the world that 3-4 inches.

Finally got to take the K out for a long ride. The first item of business is the installation of the Johnny blanket, man this thing throws off some heat... The windshield is to short for me as I had a lot of buffeting, will have to look for a taller one. Otherwise the bike rides great!  :riding:

I have tore the dash apart of the LT to replace the speakers and instrument cluster lights. When removing the carrier underneath the windshield it had 2 plastic hoses attached at the top inside of the piece. They weren't attached at the other end. They were about 2 feet long and went near the head light. Any ideas what this is for?

Where are your windshield wipers?!?!?!


They are drains and just hang down and drip in front of the radiator. Riding I n the rain water will be driven up the body work under the windshield and hit that trough at the top and drain out the hoses.

Be sure to score yourself some silicone lube for the operator rails there before you put it back together. I lube mine up 1-2 times a year.

Worked on the K bike this week. Added a manual fan switch, which was very easy thanks to the info I learned from this site. I put the switch in the console up by the windshield. I'm also enclosing pictures of the new Cee Bailey windshield I purchased. It is +3" taller than stock and +5" taller than the one on my bike when I got it.

I added a new RKA 10.0 liter Mini eXpandable SuperSport 3 Point tankbag to the LT. I researched a long time to find one I liked and would fit. Multivario was my first choice but couldn't find one that wasn't trashed or to much $$$. The RKA is a little on the small side but doesn't interfere with the handle bars plus the LT has all the luggage for my stuff.

Steve - a quick question on the RKA tank bag.  Does it slide around with that 3 point harness?  I've been thinking of getting one, my current Eclipse (which I've had for over 35 years) is starting to wear out, I have to use a bungee cord to keep it from sliding....

The RKA is very solid on the lt tank. It took a little experimenting to find a mounting point that corresponds to the correct angles of the "Y", once I did it's nice and solid. I originally was going to get the 13 liter RKA bag but they recommended this one for the K1100lt.

I like the size of that bag. I have the mutivario but honestly it's a bit bulky so. I don't use it a whole lot.

How quick does it come off?
