I really wish I'd known about this or thought to look about 10 years ago!!

Considering the lack of maintenance as recommended by the manufacturer (and not suggested by the non-BMW place where I got other maintenance items that felt out of my comfort range / time available) I guess I should be grateful for 23 years of ownership and riding without ever a problem!

Reposting a photo of what happens if you don't lube!! :

I did take a 1,200 mile round Lake Superior ride immediately before checking. I would not have gone had I known which is mostly why I didn't check.

My wife would have been very very pleased to hook up a trailer to my truck and retrieve me 600 km away from home  :johnny

Dear all:
do you know if the same spline problems are present in other shaft driven machines, like Hondas, Yamahas and Suzukis of the same vintage? Do not get me wrong: I love my K75, but spending a day to lube a stupid spline does not seem reasonable. Something is not designed correctly IMHO.

Johnny and members of this board:

Plenty of other machines like cars, motorbikes, washers, dryers have design faults. My concern is that BMW produced these machines from 1987 to 1993/1994 and did not fix the problem!

Many of the other design problems that I have found in BMWs do not result in your getting stranded by the side of the road. I have owned, in age order and R75/6 (uses some oil and the clunk when shifting is not something enjoyable), an E36 (constant replacement of the lower control arm bushing), E39 wagon (rear subframe bushing were crap and badly designed), E92 (oil filter housing leak), F25 (breaks a little underdesigned for spirited driving). All of them are annoyances, none are "sorry, call the tow truck" like this spline thing.

I hereby declare that I will faithfully lube the splines, but I still do not like it.

I would be riding, but it is cold in Michigan already !!!

I approach bike maintenance as foreplay.  Look to derive as much pleasure from it as possible with the knowledge that you will be very glad when it comes time for the ride.

The nice thing about Motobricks is that all the routine stuff can be done in a December weekend without killing yourself.  Driveshaft splines can be done in about two hours once a year,  and the clutch splines only need to be done every 25-40,000 miles which works out to every 5-10 years, maybe longer.

Atta boy! The Paralever remedied the condition in late 1989. Roadside stranding is down to ignorance.

People have been stranded by cv-joint noises they ignored, engine oil levels they failed to check, transmission oil levels they failed to check, coolant levels they failed to check, tire pressure they failed to check and check engine lights they failed to take seriously. The importance of regular rear spline maintenance has been written ad nauseum in several BMW forums for at least a decade.

Are you bringing this up here because your cat leaps from your lap and leaves the room when you bring this up at home? :-)
