Bypassing the BMU...
« on: September 26, 2013, 08:30:18 PM »
Hi guys:

Just got through doing this on my naked '85 K.

To read the manuals, you must remove the gas tank to get at the relay box and all the steps involved in that...

I just unbolted the rear bracket backed the tank out a bit (rearward) and lifted it  and propped the bracket on the edge of the seat (w/a rag between) that I left opened to get at the fuse/relay box.

While I don't have the fairings - whatever needs to be taken off on the left side to allow you to move the tank a bit to the left will do it.

Damn service manuals are written by people who want people to believe they have to spend a lot of money on labor if they aren't willing to do it themselves!

Just wanted to let people know it sometimes isn't as complicated as others would have you believe.

Pallum's and Duck's directions are great.

Since I am by no means someone used to working with anything but bullet and Deutsch connectors, it took me a few minutes to figure out to use a small jeweler's flat blade screwdriver slipped into the connector on the flat side and pull the wire from the back to get them out of it.

If I can save anyone some time or lessen what seems to be a daunting task, I will consider this post worthwhile.

Yeah the manuals for these bikes leave a lot to be desired. I guess I've been spoiled by Toyota manuals. They are step by step with the specs right there so you don't have to flip back and forth for torque numbers and readings. They are written in plain engriish with pictures and diagrams where somebody sitting in the jungle in a third world country with hand tools and a multimeter can do the repairs. Whats really stupid is the injection on my 86 4runner is not much different then what's on the 100's so I know it can be done without their test set.

Example:
I wanted to check my TPS as I was getting some surging at steady hwy speed. I expected to look in the factory manual find a TPS pin out with the values I should see just like my toyota manual and instead I get "plug in BMW test set made of unobtanium (that the Atlanta BMW apparently doesn't have) set switch to y and see if temp light comes on".....WTF?

Found a post from Duck that tells how to do it with my meter. So when in doubt search here first. Chances are somebody here has posted a process to do it.

Now Brad when are we going to see a build thread and some pictures?  Do I need to come take them?  I live behind Frankie's. ;)
