'85 K100rt won't start....
« on: September 15, 2013, 02:56:36 PM »
I purchased this bike last spring, it ran good when I test-rode it ,aside from a bad battery. The bike had not been registered since 2008 . When I got the bike home I charged the battery enough to start it and took a spin to get gas. After filling up the it would not start. I let it sit at the gas station for an hour , came back and it started up. Here is where I could kick myself. I parked the bike with the intention of getting on it soon as it is a project bike ( going to make an industrial scrambler type thing) , anyway I am self-employed and took on a big job over the spring and summer and the bike has sat for over 6 months without fuel stableizer. Fast forward to yesterday, I installed a new battery, pumped out all the fuel, added fresh gas and some seafoam, no luck . I have been pricing fuel pump/ filter kits and remanufactured injectors at Beemer bonyard. I am willing to bite the bullet and drop the cash on improving the fuel system as the bike is in good shape (36k miles). Any thoughts on if I should start there ? Any other ideas on what to check? I will do the work myself with a bit a of help from mc mechanic buddy.

Thanks

Jim m.

First try just replacing the filter. Check spark. If that's good get your injectors cleaned. Look through the Lieberry Card Catalog under Fuel Systems.

You might also check the 4 pin plug at the right rear of the fuel tank(under the seat or behind the right side cover). Check for 12 on the green wire to brown wire while pressing the start switch.
Sometimes the female(tank side) part of the connection gets expanded and looses contact, thus no fuel pump......

(Okay Gang, Correct me if I'm wrong on this!!!!!)

You can try spraying starter fluid in the air intake to see if it is getting any spark. (if you have never worked with Starter Fluid before read and follow the directions or you can blow something up!)

If so then look at the fuel system. Check the fuel pump by removing the supply tube from the pump to the injector rail and put it in a can or jar then try and start the bike. If you get fuel flow into the can, then look at the injectors.

This is a down & dirty way of diag. but it works to narrow down the problem area(s).

Opus. ... wouldn't it be easier to just pull a plug?

You can to check for spark and you may be able to smell for gas.

If you use Starter Fluid the bike will try to startup if you are getting a good spark to the plugs.
Then you can almost rule out plugs and wires and coils and other electronics in one go. (not to say that there may NOT be a smaller problem that may be present that may also be causing a problem) I spray it in the air intake and if the motor try's to start then I know that it is a better that 80% chance it is fuel delivery issue and work the problem from there. And I have not turned one screw.

But that was how I was told to do it and it has worked well for me.
But like I said, "Correct me if I'm wrong!" That is what I love about this forum.
There is always tons of things to learn here and great people to help out when you need it!

Wow! so much great info here. Thanks to all for responding so quickly. I think I'll check the tank leads first, then spark and go from there. I will probably still pull the pump and check that the isolator is not goo and bench test the pump for piece of mind and swap in a new filter then move on to the injectors. Pulled off all fairings today  anyone want to swap a good stock seat for my Corbin? No rips or tears. My rear break reservoir is toast at the hose connect , my-local Beemer guy said DON'T touch it!!!  And what do I  do? ,anyway I just scratched it with my fingernail and next thing I know it's puking fluid(have one on order).

Thanks again, will let you know how things shape up.

Jim
