Brakes still squeaking ! HELP !
« on: August 13, 2013, 11:53:28 AM »
I have taken the front brakes apart and cleaned the dust with dawn and hot water and a tooth brush. Put them back. Together and greasing everything up with silicone brake brake grease. I also scuffed the  pads and rotors with a scotch Brite. Still squeaking ! Advice .....???? Thxs. Jeff

What pads do you have. Semi-Metalics can squeal.
I installed some kevlar non-metalics a while back on both bikes and I'm not having any squeeling of any kind.

The source of the squeal is usually from where the backside of the pads (metal) meets the piston (also metal). When you apply the brakes these two metal surfaces vibrate and rub together resulting in a squeal.

I went to a local auto shop, they had a material specially made for this purpose, i.e. to stop squealing breaks. Itīs glued to the backsides of the pads, and voila, the squeal is gone.

I forgot to champher the leading edge of the pads , some say that helps. Also , may be a dumb question but what do semi metallics like? I would say I do there are bits of what looks like brass in a gray dense material . I am not crazying about gluing pads to with anti squeal unless its easily removable .....??

Hi jeffhestand....there are many anti-squeal products out there...liquid moly, wurth to name a few.  You must pull ur pads, apply product to back of pad, let it dry and reinstall pads.   Personally I just let em squeak and ride.

You lift out the pads, glue the material on, and it stayīs there until the pads are worn out and you throw them away. Donīt understand why you would ever want to remove it!? Easy as a pie, cost almost nothing, half an hours work and the squeal is gone.

You know the HD guys with teh patches that say "LOUD PIPES SAVE LIVES"?

There is a modern K bike forum where a guy had a bunch of stickers made up that looked just like it that says "LOUD BRAKES SAVE LIVES".  :hehehe

As a dealer will tell you ... They all do that.   :dunno2:

My brakes make noise off and on, I have Galfer Wave rotors on the front now and they still make noise.  All the magic brake squeal sprays in the world don't change it so I don't care anymore.
