Leaking Final Drive

:musicboohoo: Well another small annoyance in my quest to get my newly acquired '94 K1100RS up and running fully serviced. The final drive has a slow drip from around the washer/gasket. I've replaced the plug twice and gaskets 3 times and can't seem to get a permanent seal. Is this a known problem with FD? :dunno2: Any other suggestions on what I could try, other than maybe putting some liquid gasket compound  :dunno on the washer before resealing it.

It may well be the FD oil seal. Spray the area down with carb cleaner , wipe off and watch above the plug for oil coming down. Mine has the same problem. :eek:

Nah, it is clean and definitely coming from around the gasket. I've tried both stock Aluminum and copper gaskets to no avail!

Sounds to me like your next option is a light film of gasket sealer on the crush ring when you assemble.

You are using at torque wrench, right? 23Nm.

Did somebody cross thread the drain plug so it's not seating square when you bottom out?

I don't think so. I've used different plugs and washers and all came off easy and went on easy, and a visual on the threads did not show any damage or visible cracks around the drain opening lip. The next thing I could think of was to use a chamfering tool to recut/dressup the lip in case that is warped. Although I don't see how that could have happened; which is why I'm asking here to see if anyone else has had any similar problem that was not alleviated  simply by replacing the washer, like normal after an oil service change.

Look for a scratch or gouge or any defect on the sealing face of the final drive. The crush washer can't deform in to seal those so would be like having no seal at all. If so you can wrap some sand paper or similar around a bit of 2x4 to make it flat and smooth again. Same would go for the plug but you said you tried different plugs.

Are you using crush washers from the dealer or from another source?

The OEM aluminum crush washer is a pretty tight fit to the plug so it should seal well.

Tried several types. Currently using newly ordered A14X18-AL BMW Part Number 07119963200 and new Mag. Plug 14X1.5 Part Number 11131744329.
Also to answer question above: There is no visible surface defects or anomalies, but still getting slow seepage from around washer area. :nono
