The SignalMinder SM6 LED TurnSignal Thread
« on: May 17, 2013, 11:38:30 PM »
The seller's site for the SM-6 states:

"SM-6 operates all four turn signal lamps at reduced intensity to enhance your visibility in the traffic. This conversion is all done internally without any modifications to the wiring. This optional feature can be enabled or disabled on the fly."

How is it done on the fly?

Anyone have any issues with the SM-6?

I had never heard of the SM-6, but I did some reading about it. Looks like a neat addition for the bike. Something else on the list for me to get.

Nice. i just ordered one.  The running lights option is what i'm looking for.  Really want that.  At night i think i'll be better seen and the fast flashes when lane changing can't hurt either.

Thanks for the feedback!

The SM-6 running lights option also illuminates the turn signal indicators in the instrument cluster which I find annoying,

Also, K bike turn signal lenses are not designed to have filament bulbs on all of the time and the heat generated by that will eventually warp the turn signal lenses to some extent.  However, since the SM-6 allows you to run LED 1156s without hyperflashing you can avoid this by running LED turn signal bulbs.

Do you have any idea how running the LED 1156s will affect the BMU?

Glad to do it, and it makes good sense, but brick brother detbmw had issues with the LEDs working on the front of his bike, stating that they don't turn on / flash.  Is there something that he did not do, or something that needs to be modified / connected / bridged to make them work? :dunno

Plus, if there's a chance that turn signal lenses would be warped by such a product, wouldn't they state the possibility of such an occurrence on their site where the SM-6 is touted to prevent a flood of complaints? :dunno2:

Welcome your thoughts.

There's a post on the forum somewhere, but essentially it's the polarity with LEDs.  You have to reverse the polarity of the front turn signals.  You can either rewire or shave a little corner off the connector at the bulb and just stick it back in backwards.

Thanks for that.
1) Is the front turn signal polarity the same on a K1?
2) It will be blatantly obvious to me when i start to do this job what it meant by "little corner off the connector at the bulb"?
3) Any chance of me ruining a perfectly good LED?

It should be the same issue, though I can't be 100% sure. Duck might know.  If its the same connector. It'll be obvious.

Had to do both fronts on mine last year. Both reversed.

Got the SM-6 and put 600+ miles on the bike with it last weekend.  i like it for the most part.  Don't like that it illuminates the left and right blinker instrument bulbs.  That's not necessary IMO.  The only benefit of having that is that one can tell the level of brightness of the running light settings.  Regardless, illuminated left and right blinker instrument bulbs are still useless to me.  Taking the pluses with the minuses, all in all it's a good product.

The running lights got many comments from the K1 Club of Japan folks.  They liked the fast flash function and the adjustable brightness of the running lights.  No comments about the adjustable delay time.

Forgive me if I misunderstand this product, will this allow you to hook up after market led turn signals?

Thanks, I've been eye balling this after frying my old flasher relay (still attempting to fix it.) At least I can make use of my old LED strip setup and front signals. The 100$ will be well spent.

Wrap the aluminum body well with electrical tape first to prevent any accidental shorting
